Joe Koy’s focus is firmly on his son, Joseph Herbert Jr.
“I love being a dad,” Koy said on Father’s Day 2023.
The stand-up comedian, born Joseph Glenn Herbert, was married to Filipino-American singer Angie King (stage name: Nura Luca) from 2003 to 2013. The couple has one child together, a son, Joseph Herbert Jr., 21. April 2003.
“My son is just a walking joke to me,” Koy joked Larry King live in 2019 “…If what I pay for happens within these walls, I will use it, and you will enjoy what we make of you together.”
Joseph has provided a lot of food for his dad over the years, but watching the specials back is bittersweet, with Koy adding, “It makes me happy, but it makes me depressed because he literally grows up in every special and it breaks my heart.”
Although he jokes about Joseph’s antics, it’s clear how much Koy loves his son. So much so that, even though he and King are no longer together, they remain close and live down the street.
“We are a loving family and we can work. Just because you’re not married, it doesn’t mean you can’t be best friends,” Koy na said The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2021. “You still have the responsibility to raise this beautiful child together. And it’s fun to see my son see his parents happy.”

Joseph Herbert Jr. was born to Jo Koy and Angie King at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on April 21, 2003. He grew up in LA, where he attended private school.
“I’ve always said that my life didn’t start until you were born. Now I’m excited to see what your future holds,” Koy wrote on Instagram on Joseph’s 18th birthday in 2021. “The world is yours my son and I’ll be with you the whole way.”
The Jo Koy in his element said the star GQ that when his son was young, he was still a struggling comedian and worked in a bookstore and a shoe store. Koy quit all his jobs – he also cleaned yachts on weekends and was an assistant – after appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2005.
“Mind you, it wasn’t even that much money, but it was enough to survive. It was enough to feed my child. Suffice it to say, I know I can take this and come back a year from now and get the same check,” Koy said Florida-Times Union in 2017.
Koy and King divorced in 2013, but lived down the block from each other. King even lived in Koy’s guest house during the pandemic to ensure Joseph could see both parents.
“At the beginning [the divorce] it was rough, and that’s okay, but the older we got, the more we realized that we were best friends and that this was the best thing we could do for our child. And he’s so happy about it,” Koy said Windy City LIVE in October 2020.
“We just love our son very much. It’s mostly for our son,” King added of her and Koya’s amicable co-parenting after her ex joined the live Zoom interview.
He’s Dad’s #1 fan

Joseph has been by his father’s side through the ups and downs of Koy’s career, which included Koy facing rejection as the comedian pushed for better representation of Filipinos in Hollywood.
“My son was there when Netflix said no; It’s hot [my special, Jo Koy:] Live from Seattle; I had to pay for it. He knows what his dad went through, so he knows it wasn’t just about me,” he said Chelsea lately alum told Tatler Philippines special that he supported out of his own pocket, which Netflix will eventually buy and release in March 2017.
Joseph was a major part of his father’s business. On stage and in his specials, Koy joked about his son’s hygiene and adolescent angst, with plenty of fodder coming from Joseph’s teenage years.
“I’m living with a guy now,” Koy joked The Aspen Times 2019, when Joseph was 16 years old. “He thinks he’s cool, but I think he’s just a dirty roommate, and I have too many stories about him.”
However, Koy is sensitive to his son. The two teamed up for a Netflix promo in which Joseph commented on his father’s jokes about him in the special Jo Koy: I’m coming Hot, and Koy ended up saying, “I love this kid.” The proud dad also says he always puts Joseph’s “feelings” first.
“If he doesn’t want me to talk about it, I won’t. But for the most part he agrees with it,” he said The Aspen Times.
He gets comedy from his father

During the appearance at the 2019 River City liveKoy discovered that the family’s planned trip to Hawaii fell through because his son failed history and had to attend summer school—a scenario Koy could not understand because he had hired a tutor for his son.
While joking about his son’s grades, Metal Shop Masters adding that Joseph is “really funny.”
“I didn’t excel in school because I knew I was creative and I knew I was going to be a comedian when I graduated high school, and I know my son is creative,” Koy told the Jacksonville, Fla., morning news. program. “I know she’s got a creative mind and a sense of fashion and comedy, and I know that’s going to be the path she’s going to take after school. So I will be there to help him, but in no way will I force him or discourage him from doing anything.”
Joseph is currently working as part of his father’s crew, including going on Koy’s 2023 world tour.
“Nothing better than seeing the world with my son,” Koy captioned a photo of the couple at their first stop in Anchorage, Alaska, in August.

In an episode where Boyz II Men and friends battle comedian Amber Ruffin and her family, the father-son duo competed on “Team Boyz” alongside Wanna Morris, Shawn Stockman and Joe Mulvihill.
They were also in an Easter Sunday family showdown episode of Team Koy vs. Team Gaston (Lydia Gaston played Koy’s mother in the movie).
When introducing his son during the second episode, Koy told host Steve Harvey: “He’s so talented! He’s so funny, Steve! And I’m so honored to be on the road and share these memories with him because he works with me and rides everywhere with me.”
His social media posts are family oriented

Joseph has nearly 55,000 followers on Instagram, but he’s not a frequent poster — his parents share many more photos of themselves with their son on their Instagram accounts — but the two photos Joseph currently has speak volumes about his priorities.
The first image is a birthday tribute to his mom from 2021, and the second is a black and white photo of him and his dad on stage at The Forum in Los Angeles in February 2020.
“I still can’t believe this happened. So proud and so happy you lived one of your dreams. @jokoy 🐐,” Joseph wrote alongside the photo on Instagram.
He walked red carpets with his parents

Although Joseph keeps his life relatively private, he is no stranger to big-name events.
He has been seen walking red carpets with his father on several occasions, including the premiere night This is where love lies on Broadway and Tiffany Haddish’s 1st Annual Adult Prom: A Night Under The Stars, both in 2023.
Both Joseph and King proudly attended the world premiere of Koy’s film in 2022. Easter Sunday.
“I am beyond proud of my best friend @jokoya for what he has accomplished so far and what he continues to do for our Filipino community. What this means to our family is beyond compare,” King wrote in an Instagram slideshow that began with a photo of her and Joseph on the red carpet in August 2022.
Just as cool as red carpets? Dodger Stadium. Joseph got to hang out with his dad on the field when Koy threw out the first pitcher in a 2021 Los Angeles Dodgers game.
He has known Tiffany Haddish and his father’s ex Chelsea Handler for years

Joseph has long been a regular at Koy’s standup shows, meaning he’s met plenty of comedians, including Chelsea Handler and Haddish.
Koy and Handler are longtime friends who dated for about a year before splitting in July 2022.
In January 2021, Koy shared a pint-sized memory of Handler and Joseph, teasingly captioning the photo, “#tbt when @chelseahandler and my son went to the same barber.”
As for Haddish, she was babysitting Joseph when Koy took the stage to do a set at The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles.
Years later, Koy said Larry King live that his eyes watered when he brought the grown-up Joseph back to the famous place of comedy.
“I brought him up on stage and I pointed to the balcony, and I’m going, I just want you to know that you were up there as a kid, as a little baby, man, and now we’re sharing the stage,” Koy shared. “It was a crazy moment.”
He traveled the whole world with his family

Koy and King are Filipinos and visited family and friends in the Philippines. Their son, Joseph, went on many of these transcontinental adventures, the most recent in early 2023.
King shared a video montage from the trip, which she called “Homeland,” showing the family enjoying traditional meals and hiking.
During the appearance at 2023 Show Jennifer HudsonKoy told host Jennifer Hudson that King is involved in every trip involving their son.
“We are a team. We made this child, so let’s share this as a family,” the Mixed plate said the author.
Apart from the Philippines, Joseph has visited places like New York, Dubai and Tokyo.
