All About Norman Reedus’ Son Mingus Lucien Reedus

Mingus Lucien Reedus is the only child of actor Norman Reedus and model Helena Christensen.

The former couple met through a mutual friend in 1998 and dated for five years before divorcing in 2003. They welcomed their son one year into their relationship on October 13, 1999.

“When we met, it was just perfect. I met her through a DJ and artist friend of mine in LA at a birthday party downtown at a Japanese restaurant,” Norman said. He was born on October 13, 1999

Mingus was born to Norman and Christensen on October 13, 1999. His unique nickname was a nod to the famous jazz musician Charles Mingus.

“His father especially likes Charlie Mingus,” Christensen said The Independent in June 2006. “I preferred Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday — but we thought ‘Mingus’ sounded cooler than ‘Monk’ for a first name.”

Norman and Christensen raised Mingus in New York. The Walking Dead said the actor Men’s magazine in December 2017 that following his split with the model, they shared custody of their son and lived just “a five-minute walk” from each other in Lower Manhattan.

He has a younger sister

Mingus has a younger half-sister named Nova.

Norman welcomed Nova with fiancee Diane Kruger in 2018, giving the siblings an age gap of nearly two decades. Kruger told PEOPLE in April 2019 that Mingus is embracing his new role as an older brother.

“He’s great! You know 19 years is a big gap, so he really becomes this protective older brother,” she said.

In June 2021, Christensen posted a sweet Instagram photo of Norman walking with Mingus and Nova as part of a Father’s Day tribute to the actor. “Happy Father’s Day to our son’s father (and his sister). We raised a good one,” she captioned the picture.

He is a model

Mingus began modeling in 2017 and signed with The Society Management, according to his Instagram bio.

In addition to walking the catwalk for designers including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Versace, Mingus has also starred in several fashion campaigns with his supermodel mom. The pair posed together in the 2021 Mother’s Day campaign for Victoria’s Secret and again for Marcell Von Berlin, a Berlin-based fashion brand, in 2022 to celebrate their suit collection.

During the interview with Grazia magazineChristensen said it’s “always great” to work with her son, but she rarely gives him modeling advice.

“We have a lot of fun together sharing little jokes between us throughout the day. It’s good to have a secret language on set, so you can really let the dark humor flow, and my son is a master of that,” she said. “We have a very simple approach to it. Go get the job done as fast as you can and have fun with it.”

Christensen also told the outlet that while Mingus is “grateful” for the modeling opportunities, it’s not his main passion as he “spends all his time making music and studying film.”

He likes to play chess

Mingus has many artistic interests, but he is also a very talented chess player. Christensen told in 2007 Express that her son is “great” at a complicated game.

“We just discovered that he is an excellent chess player. “He went to his first tournament and came third out of 50 kids and was asked to play on the US national team,” she said. “He only played for two years. He’s already beating his dad with his eyes closed. Mingus is very blasé about it, of course.”

He showed his chess skills in an episode of his father’s show, Ride with Norman Reedus, 2017. In a clip shared with Party tonightMingus and Norman can be seen playing chess in a NYC park, where the then 18-year-old quickly defeated his opponent.

“I used to teach Mingus when he was young. We’d come here, play game after game, and I’d watch him beat people in minutes. And I’d think, ‘That’s my kid,'” the actor said. “Seeing Mingus in his element reminds me how great it is that he grew up here. He has that armor that every real New Yorker has.”

Mingus studied film at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and graduated in May 2023.

His parents were present to celebrate his great achievement. Christensen shared a selfie with Mingus and Norman on Instagram with the caption, “You did it!!” The post also included a video of the father and son, who in purple and white prom dresses raised their arms in victory as they walked down the street.

In an interview with Flaunt magazine, Mingus said he always had a passion for art and film. “Both of my parents live through art and made sure I grew up with the same passion for it,” he said of the house. “In preschool, I was part of a stop-motion class where we made clay monsters, wrote a story for them and turned them into short films. I still have all the CDs.”

He also talked about the directors and films that influenced his creative direction. “My favorite directors right now are the Safdie brothers,” Mingus said. “I love their dark and chaotic style. I remember when I first fell in love with a movie, Train spotting. I was 14 and I must have watched it three times in a row. I was really mesmerized by every aspect of the film: the acting, the script, the sets and the soundtrack that really mesmerized me – they created the atmosphere.”

During his time at NYU, Mingus had a brief run-in with the law and was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman in NYC in September 2021. Mingus’ attorney, Isabelle Kirshner, told PEOPLE in November 2021 that the allegations are “baseless and he will face s rigorous defense. He was the victim of this incident.” The model later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct.

He is a musician

Besides movies, Mingus also likes music. As a music producer, he goes by his middle name, Lucien, and often posts original beats on his SoundCloud.

“Making beats really became therapeutic for me,” Mingus said Flaunt magazine. “A production tune is essentially a painting, but instead of the final product showing something, it tells something — not a story, but a vibe. At the end of the day, it’s my favorite way to completely relax. I must have over 400 beats on my laptop.”

Norman and Christensen always take the opportunity to praise their son, especially on his birthday. In 2021, the former couple celebrated Mingus’ 21st birthday by posting sweet tributes to him on their Instagram accounts.

“21 years with this great person who I love more than anything ♥️. I am constantly inspired by your interesting, smart, cool, kind mind and graceful way of being,” Christensen described presenting Mingus over the years. “Happiest 21st birthday Mingus ♥️🎁♥️. Can’t wait to share a bottle of sake with you later.”
