Like his father, Patrick played three sports in high school, playing football, baseball and basketball. Although he was talented at all three, Pat thought he showed the most promise in baseball.
“He grew up in the clubhouse, he was always in the game and he was always the best player on his baseball team,” Pat told Los Angeles Times his son. “He was an amazing fastball player, he always led his team in hitting, and he threw 97 mph on the mound, so I always thought he was going to be a baseball player.”
At one point, Pat wanted his son to quit football after his sophomore year to focus on baseball. “I just thought we were wasting time when he could have been working on the sports he would have gone to college for, baseball and basketball. Besides, I didn’t want him to get hurt,” he told the newspaper.
However, Randi’s mom intervened. “She told him to pray about it and think about what he wanted to do and God would give him the answers. I guess God told him to keep playing,” Pat recalled.
Now, Pat thinks his son’s experience playing baseball and basketball is what helped shape him into the quarterback he is today. “You can tell by the way Patrick plays guard that he’s taken parts of his basketball, the jumps and no-look passes, and parts of his baseball, different arm angles, and put it all together in a package in football,” he added.
Patrick’s ability to heal quickly comes from Randi
Although the running back suffered from a sprained ankle and was clearly in pain during the 2023 AFC Championship game, he still managed to hit a top speed of 28.14 mph. After the game, Pat said The Washington Post“We have a family motto: Players play. And so, he made the game.”
However, Patrick’s father noticed that his son had an extraordinary sense of healing – one that came from Randi. “His mom has some different genes. She’s a double and all that,” he said. “He got that from his mom. The athletic ability comes from me. That part comes from his mom.”

Pat and Randi are their son’s biggest fans and show their support in different ways. The former professional baseball player is very superstitious and wears the same outfit over and over to ensure his son wins. “Anything to win,” he said during an interview with FOX4 in January 2020.[What’s working] it works, so you know, you just have to keep developing it until it fails.” He then recalled how he almost “froze to death” wearing the same white shorts and T-shirt during the winter.
Randi also spoke to FOX4 about her pride for her son. “I am very, very proud. I always say that we are blessed. He is blessed to be able to achieve his dream – to live doing exactly what he loves,” she told the newspaper.
After Patrick and the Chiefs won the AFC Championship, Randi posted a photo of herself posing with all her kids, as well as Patrick’s wife and daughter, on the field, with the caption, “Words can’t describe my emotions. I love my family more than anything ❤️ #blessed.”
On February 9, 2023, just days before the 2023 Super Bowl, Randi shared another post about her son. This time, it was a flashback of her and Patrick from his high school football days.
“This seems like yesterday but today I’m going to watch (and try to 🫣) my boy. Cheering for my kids never gets old. I wouldn’t have it any other way #chiefs #15 #ibelieve #blessed,” the doting mom captioned the post.
Pat and Randi cheer Patrick on as he wins the 2023 Super Bowl
The NFL released a cute video Pata hugging her son on the field after the Chiefs won the 2023 Super Bowl. “What a moment for the Mahomes family,” read the headline.
Randi also showed her support for her son’s big win by sharing several photos of the athlete after the game on Instagram. She included a shot of Patrick with his brother and half-sister Mia, a shot of the quarterback resting in a chair, and a picture of her and Patrick smiling together.
“This is the most real picture of the night,” she captioned Patrick’s solo photo. “So many emotions looking at it full of love and devotion. My firstborn, who made me grow up and become a mom…taught me how to love unconditionally forever.”

A few months later, in January 2024, it was Pat’s turn to talk about Swift in an interview for an outlet in Kansas City Starcade Media. He called her “down to earth” when he told the story of their first meeting.
“I actually walked up and introduced myself to her and she said she knew who I was because she was watching Back series,” he said. “Every time I’ve hung out with her, she acts like a normal person.”
