All About Robert De Niro and Tiffany Chen’s Baby Girl, Gia

Robert De Niro and Tiffany Chen are proud parents.

In April 2023, the couple welcomed a baby girl named Gia Virginia Chen De Niro; the actor revealed the first photo of Gia on CBS Morning in May.

After meeting on the set Intern In 2015, De Niro, 80, and Chen, 45, sparked dating rumors in August 2021 when they were seen holding hands while on vacation together.

They later made their first public appearance as a couple at the Cannes Film Festival, when they attended the premiere of De Niro’s film, The Flower Moon Assassins.

Although the couple are quite private, they have shared a glimpse into their lives as parents. Read everything De Niro and Chen had to say about their baby girl ahead.

De Niro and Chen’s baby girl, Gia, was born on April 6, 2023, weighing 8 lbs., 6 oz. The actor did not publicly announce his arrival until the following month, when he said ET Canada that he had just welcomed a newborn.

Soon after, CBS MorningGayle King shared more details about her daughter. In addition to revealing her full name, Gia Virginia Chen De Niro, the show also debuted her first photo; King added that De Niro was “tense” about the newest member of the family.

She is the seventh child of Robert De Niro

Gia is the first child for Chen and De Niro’s seventh child. De Niro and his first wife Diahnne Abbott are parents to daughter Dren and son Raphael. In 1995, he had twin sons Julian and Aaron with his ex-girlfriend, model and actress Toukie Smith. De Niro also shares a son, Elliot, and a daughter, Helen Grace, with ex-wife Grace Hightower.

During a June 2023 interview with PEOPLE, De Niro revealed that his six children have yet to meet Gia. “Not yet, but it will,” he added. De Niro also told PEOPLE that his Father’s Day is booked, explaining that he’s “just going to spend it with the kids and stuff.”

Tiffany Chen was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy after giving birth to Gia

After Chen gave birth to her child with De Niro, she experienced a terrifying postpartum health complication and was eventually diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. She opened up about her experience during an interview with Gayle King on CBS Morning in July 2023.

“When I went home, I started to feel like … my tongue was weird,” she said. “I felt a little tingling, I just started to go a little numb. And then I realized my face was just weird. I didn’t know what that feeling was. I felt weird.”

“When I got home, it was like everything just started to collapse. It was like my face was melting by itself,” Chen explained. “And then a week after giving birth, that’s when everything started.” After she started speaking unintelligibly, she knew something was wrong. She noted that she was immediately told, “‘Go straight to the hospital.’ [The hospital] he admitted me. And I lost all facial function as soon as I got to the hospital,” she said.

Talking to Guard in October 2023, De Niro opened up about life with his new child, noting how Chen had jumped into motherhood.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” he said of parenting. “It is what it is. It’s okay. I mean, I’m not doing the heavy lifting. I’m here, I’m supporting my girlfriend. But she’s getting the job done. And we’ve got help, which is so important.”

But is he enjoying parenthood? “Of course I want,” he said, “all of that. It’s different with a baby [than] with her 11-year-old. My grown children. My grandchildren. Everything is different.”

In recent months, De Niro has gushed about Gia in front of the cameras. During the performance at Today in June 2023, De Niro was asked about being a new baby daddy, to which he replied, “It feels great.”

He continued on his parenting evolution, “I have a certain awareness — when you’re older, you have an awareness of certain things in life, dynamics, everything, family dynamics. You can’t avoid learning certain things and how you can deal with that and manage them and this and onim, the usual. It’s unbelievable, but I’m very happy about it.”

The presenter then presented De Niro with a Today jumpsuit as a gift, which he proudly held up to the camera and said, “Gia, this is for you, baby.”
