All About Sigourney Weaver's Child, Shar Simpson

No matter how many sci-fi franchises she stars in or how many accolades she garners, Sigourney Weaver has always made it clear that her greatest role is being a mother to her only child, Shar Simpson.

“My [child] [Shar] is absolutely the most important thing to me,” said the Golden Globe-winning actress The Guardian 2010 “My family comes first and I’m very grateful to them for letting me go and make films. But, you know, it’s very hard for me to leave them. I hate it. I’ve been in therapy and I think it’s helped me cope with the guilt I felt about going to New Zealand Avatar when it’s mine [child] applying to colleges almost killed me.”

Weaver met her husband, theater director Jim Simpson, while at a bar with friend and fellow actor Christopher Walken in 1983. According to a 2023 interview. The couple married on October 1, 1984, just three months later, and welcomed their first and only child, Shara, on April 13, 1990, in New York. Although their mother has been in the spotlight for decades, Shar keeps a much lower profile working as a professor, interactive writer and creative producer.

They were born in New York

Like their mother, Shar was also born in New York. Their father, Jim, co-founded The Flea Theater in lower Manhattan in 1996, stepping down from that role in 2015.

“I’m a New Yorker, so we stayed in New York,” Weaver said The Edge Magazine when asked where her family was quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic. “New Yorkers really look out for each other — even though it might not look like it.”

According to their Instagram bio, Shar still lives in the city and calls herself a “NYC shrimp.”

They are an only child

Shar is an only child. Weaver said The Guardian that she didn’t get married until she was 34 and that she didn’t want to have children right away, and in 2007 the actress wrote in Esquire that it took her and her husband “some time” to become parents.

“Until time [Shar] arrived 11 years ago, [they were] so welcome,” Weaver wrote.”[They’ve] was a great source of joy for us. If I have one regret, it’s that I would have liked to have more children. But you can’t have everything. I am beyond thrilled [them].”

They are the professor

Shar is currently an adjunct assistant professor in the Digital Storytelling Lab at Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Weaver said The Sunday Times that her child teaches “digital storytelling, bots, misinformation” and that she is “someone who is excited about AI and not afraid of it.”

According to an interview the actress gave in 2019 ParadeShar also received a dual MA from the California Institute of the Arts in Writing and Interactive Media.

“[They’re] not in the industry, bless [their] heart,” Weaver said. “It’s a nightmare for parents in the business when their child says, ‘I want to be in show business,’ because we really know what that means.”

According to their university bio, Shar has also written two Choose Your Own Adventure books — Eighth grade witch and Brooklyn Mermaid — under the name CE Simpson.

They said VoyageLA 2021 that they also designed extreme haunted houses and collaborated on immersive experiences dealing with artificial intelligence.

“I feel like my work is about the in-between, the undefined, messy and frayed parts of existence,” Shar said. “There is so much complexity and depth in the unknown—the fragility and tenderness of ambiguity. I denied myself that space for a long time, both in my work and in my personal identity.”

They acted in Weaver’s films

Shar may not have followed in his parents’ footsteps to Hollywood, but he did appear in at least one of their films. Playroom reported in 2003 that Weaver and Simpson had introduced their child Guysa film adaptation of Anna Nelson’s play about an editor who helps a fire captain write eulogies for his firefighters who died in the 9/11 attacks.

In the film, Shar played Weaver’s on-screen child, and Simpson played her husband.

“It was a very short shoot, and we don’t usually work together, so we can take turns with ours [child]”, said Simpson, who also directed the drama IndieWire 2003. “We also like to complain about who we work with when we get home, and you can’t do that when you work together because you’re watching them.”

They are not afraid of Weaver’s success

Living with a mom as successful as Weaver could be daunting, but the actress insists Shar doesn’t mind.

“Years after success StrangerI remember a friend telling me [child]: ‘Don’t you know that your mom is a great feminist icon for all women?’ Weaver said The Guardian. “AND [they] said, ‘That goes in the little box of things I don’t need to know.’ That’s how it should be in our family. Acting is something I do on the side.”

Weaver spoke openly about the guilt of being a working mother

The Ghostbusters the actress has quite a busy shooting schedule, and in 2008 she said ABC news that the guilt of juggling work and motherhood is “huge”.

“To be able to really work and not feel that pull all the time, that would be great,” Weaver said. “I’m worse than her. She’s fine without me.”

Weaver and Shar spent quality time together during the COVID-19 pandemic. The actress told The Sunday Times that her child became her hairdresser during the quarantine.
