In his 2023 Netflix documentary CunningSylvester said he was born with his “snarl” because his mother went into labor while riding a bus, causing him partial facial paralysis.

“Even though she was nine months pregnant, she was constantly riding the bus,” he said in the film. “She [went] in labour. Someone was smart enough to throw her off the bus, so they took her to the humanitarian department. And there I came into the world with this accident that somehow paralyzed all the nerves on the side of my mouth. So I was born with this growl.”

Later in the documentary, Sylvester and Frank also recalled their parents’ turbulent relationship. “I’d be up in bed and I’d just hear them screaming and yelling,” Frank said in the film. The brothers spent much of their youth living in boarding houses instead of at home.

“Most of the time I lived in a boarding house,” Sylvester said in the documentary, “mostly 12 months a year, I never went home, because they just didn’t have time, they were both working.”

Frank also recalled growing up in a boarding house, saying, “I think they were both so caught up in their own things that they just pawned us off.” Later in life, the relationship between Jackie and her sons improved and the family grew closer.

Sylvester even gave his blessing to the book, providing promotional text. “My wonderful, extraordinary, indomitable, unpredictable mother,” he wrote. “Given that she has successfully predicted every major event in my life through her incredible mastery of the ancient art of astrology, I can say that this is one mom who truly knows best.”

One of Jackie’s specialties was practicing what she called “rumpology,” which she herself defined as the practice of looking into the bumps, wrinkles, and crevices of someone’s backside to gain insight into their personality traits and potential future.

In the performance at the 1999 So Graham Norton, the host asked Jackie about the method, and she replied, “It’s the one thing you can take with you and never leave at home. You can leave your arm at home, your leg at home, do you ever see someone walking around without a butt?”
