Margaret Qualley Recalls Shock of Mom Andie MacDowell Dating Dennis Quaid After ‘Parent Trap’

As A trap for parents superfan Margaret Qualley had a surreal experience when her mom Andie MacDowell started dating one of the movie’s stars, Dennis Quaid.

The actress is in an interview for Harper’s Bazaarshe recalls loving Lindsay Lohan’s 1998 film so much as a child that she encouraged MacDowell to see it in hopes of getting her mom back together with dad Paul Qualley.

MacDowell (65) has daughters Margaret and Rainey and son Justin with her ex-husband Paul, whom she divorced in 1999.

“I would tell my mom how much I loved The parent trap and say, ‘We should watch it. It’s a really smart movie. They make a lot of good decisions in that movie,’ said Margaret, now 28.

However, Margaret was quite surprised when MacDowell started dating her 2001 co-star. Dinner with friends, Quaid, who also played the father The A trap for parents.

“He comes home and says, ‘Margaret, I know how much you love The parent trap …’ And I said: ‘Yes?’ and waiting with bated breath, hoping my parents would get back together,” Margaret said Harper’s Bazaar.

“And then in walks Dennis Quaid — her new boyfriend,” she continued. “I didn’t live in Hollywood; I lived in a normal suburban town. But then I’d have those ‘What the hell?’ moments.”

Margaret has previously spoken about her real life A trap for parents connection while on The Late Late Show still in 2019.

“Being a child of divorce, I really stuck to myself The parent trap. I like both versions, but I was particularly drawn to the Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quaid version,” she said at the time.

“I would keep saying, ‘Hey guys, I don’t know if you’ve seen The parent trapbut things turned out pretty great for them, didn’t they?” Margaret recalled the film’s plot, about twins who arrange for their separated parents to rekindle their romance and get back together. “‘I know you’re divorced, but have you seen The parent trap? Everyone is really happy in the end! What do you think?’ ”

Margaret said she would “reinforce” that feeling with her mum, hoping the film would reflect her family. She said she was “shocked” to learn MacDowell was dating Quaid.

She joked that her mom “really misunderstood” what she intended to happen with the advocacy A trap for parents — and blamed herself for the outcome.

“I was sure that everything was my fault and I wanted this to happen. I took full responsibility,” she said.
