Mercy crews rushed to the scene of the tragedy in a field near the runway, but the 50-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family has been notified and an investigation into the accident is ongoing.

No one else was injured in the tragedy.

In the nearby village of Kinglassie, a devastated local told the Scottish Sun: “There was a loud bang and two guys who were painting the pavilion at the football pitch ran over to see what was going on.

“Terrible, he flew off the hill at the airport, that would have been terrifying to witness.”

Another local added: “It wasn’t far from the residential area, you can see where it landed, and it’s just a street from the houses. I hope the pilot is okay, it’s just scary.”

The wreckage of the plane is clearly visible on the hill from Kinglassie’s high street, and drone footage shared by the Scottish Sun shows a tarp covering the site.

The plane departed from Fife Airport, which is about three miles west of Glenrothes and offers light air travel and skydiving. It is about 30 miles north of Edinburgh.

The nearby Kinglassie Miners Welfare and Bowling Club was closed for the day and is being used as a support center for emergency services.

A small number of police officers remained at the scene of the accident last night and secured the area around the scene of the accident.

Four miles away, one shocked Christmas shopper at the busy Fife Central Retail Park on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy described seeing the small plane perform “strange manoeuvres” before plummeting to the ground.

Another witness in Kirkcaldy – about ten minutes from the crash site – said they noticed something happening to the light aircraft as it turned and accelerated downwards.

The police teams were joined by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who sent three teams to the scene, including a heavy rescue unit.

A spokesman for the force said: “We received a report of a light aircraft crash near Fife Airport, Kinglassie, at around 11.40am on Monday 23 December 2024.

“The police came and the 50-year-old man, the pilot, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Those closest to him are aware.
