Trailer All That Breathes: There’s No Difference Between Things That Breathe.

The magical image of All That Breathes, as seen in the teaser, can be described in one word: “spectacular”. In Shaunak Sen’s documentary about living things and their relationships, every frame seems perfectly chosen. The documentary’s unusual theme of dragons attempts to tap into a much broader picture of humanity.

The documentary is described on the official HBO website as follows:

“Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes follows two brothers who run a bird hospital that specializes in rescuing injured black kites, which are common in the skies above New Delhi, India. The “kite brothers” care for thousands of these fascinating animals that fall every day in the smoky skies of New Delhi in one of the world’s most populous cities, home to cows, mice, monkeys, frogs and pigs coexist with humans.”

It continued:

“As environmental toxicity and civil unrest worsened, this family’s relationship with the forgotten dragons became a lyrical record of the city’s ecological decline and expanding social boundaries.”

Everything Breathes, set in Delhi, will almost certainly tackle one of the most pressing themes facing environmentalists in recent years: the ecological collapse of the city. For many years, Delhi was dominated by pollution, water shortages and inexplicable forgetfulness, and in recent years it has become one of the most discussed topics, with many opinion that it is too late to revive India’s capital. Shaunak Sen’s documentary was produced in association with HBO Documentary Films, Submarine Deluxe and Sideshow Release.

On January 22, 2022, the critically acclaimed film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. He was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the World Documentary Filmmaking Competition there. The film was also selected for a special screening area at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Golden Eye Award. After this victory, the picture was nominated for an Oscar.

Everything breathes

Nadeem Shehzad and Mohammad Saud, brothers who run a bird clinic in Wazirabad, Delhi, have cured more than 20,000 birds of prey over the past 20 years. Shaunak Sen explains his intention to kill the two brothers:

“I was intrigued by the theme of interconnected ecosystems – an ecosystem that humans are a part of, not separate from. The way humans and animals share space and become one. It’s an important story.”
