Sarah Lancashire’s performance as Sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley was one of the best TV performances we’ve seen, so here at HELLO! we were delighted when the actress received high praise at the National Television Awards this week.

The stage and film actress won the dramatic performance award and the special mention award and was overcome with emotion as she took to the stage to deliver her speeches.

Sarah’s father was Geoffrey Lancashire who worked as a television scriptwriter. The writer began his career as a journalist for the Oldham Evening Chronicle before turning to screenwriting.

After joining Granada Television as a script writer back in 1956, he would go on to write over 170 episodes Coronation Street – the show that would later launch his daughter Sarah’s career.

But it wasn’t just like that Corrie on which Geoffrey worked, the writer wrote scripts for other popular series such as Coward’s Waltz, attractive lady and All Creatures Great and Small. In 2004, Sara’s father sadly passed away at the age of 71 after a series of strokes later in life. Elsewhere in Sara’s family, she has three brothers, one older, one younger and a twin.

Sarah, who played Raquel Watts in Corrie, met her husband, Peter Salmon, through the soap while working for Grenada Studios. The couple developed a romantic relationship and later became engaged in 2001. Later that year, they tied the knot in a small ceremony in Nottinghamshire.

Before meeting her husband Peter, Sarah was first married to music teacher Gary Hargreaves. They had two sons, Thomas in 1987 and Matthew in 1988, before separating in 1995 and divorcing soon after.

Sarah also has a son Joseph born in 2003 with her current husband Peter. She is the stepmother to Peter’s three sons from his previous marriage to Penny Watt.

Meanwhile, Sarah mentioned her family as she collected her special award at the NTAs on Tuesday night. “There are also drivers who very quietly stand in the wings without expectation or credit,” she began, adding, “And they are my family, my husband, my children, my friends, my agent, Nick, thank you. And of course, very the vital component in all of this is you, the audience.”

Speaking of her admiration Happy valley creator, Sally Wainwright, Sarah continued: “I have to say some things about Sally Wainwright because she Happy valleyshe is what makes it, her writing is so extraordinary, her characters are extraordinary and anyone who receives those words is the luckiest actor in the world, really.”
