Allan Gyngell News
Allan Gyngell AO, a leading authority on Australian foreign policy, has died after a brief illness. Most recently, Mr. Gyngell served as National President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) from 2017 to 2022, during which time he contributed significantly to expanding the organization’s visibility and reach.
His sharp intellect, courteous demeanor, and extraordinary understanding of world politics gave AIIA and all the other institutions with which it was associated immense credibility.
Mr. Gyngell was Director of China Affairs and Honorary Professor at the College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University. In addition, he was an Adjunct Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy and Director of the Crawford Australian Leadership Forum.
Mr. Gyngell was a cousin of David Gyngell, former president of the Nine Network, and brother of comedian Kym Gyngell. He graduated as a member of the Foreign Service’s “Class of 69”, among the distinguished Dennis Richardson, Rico Smith and Sandy Hollway.
Mr. Gyngell possessed a vast knowledge of international politics and analysis. His initial assignment was in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). The British withdrawal of all his troops “east of the Suez Canal” was followed by a deployment to Singapore, where he witnessed the impact on the greater Indo-Pacific region. He then was assigned to Washington, DC.
He was posted to Canberra in 1974, where he helped establish Australia as ASEAN’s first official dialogue partner and attended the inaugural meeting in Indonesia. He was appointed to head the Foreign Affairs Department of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1989, and from 1993 to 1996 he served as Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to Prime Minister Paul Keating.
Before being appointed Director General of the Australian Office for National Assessment (ONA) from 2009 to 2013, he served as the founding CEO of the Lowy Institute for International Policy from 2003 to 2009. The ONA has since been absorbed by the Office of National Intelligence .
Long after his employment at the Lowy Institute, Mr. Gyngell continued to speak there regularly. In 2009 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his contribution to international relations. Mr. Gyngell has been a prolific author and contributor to evaluations and analysis. “Sadly, we have lost a great Australian,” AIIA President Heather Smith said in a statement today.
