Suze Orman was born on June 5, 1951 in Chicago in a Jewish family. Her father was from Russia and worked in a chicken factory, while her mother was from Romania and worked as a religious official in the area.

Suze Orman graduated in social work from the University of Illinois in 1976. She had to drop out of college due to family financial problems, so she moved to California and worked as a waitress at Buttercup Bakery.
She wanted to open her own restaurant after quitting her job, and saved $52,000 from savings and well-wishers.
