Allison Janney acknowledges the see-through dress she wore to the premiere of her Amazon comedy 2022. People we hate at weddings “it was a risk.”
The actress, 64, who plays a colorful 1960s socialite in new Apple TV+ comedy Palm Royale, she didn’t think ahead about red carpet flashes when choosing her dress. “I don’t think I knew how sheer that dress was,” she tells PEOPLE. “It was definitely more transparent with the photos.”

Although she eventually pulled the look, Janney, whose mother Macy died in October 2020, was thankful her mom didn’t see the photos. “I’m just glad, I mean, I’m sorry my mother isn’t here anymore, but my mother would have a few words for me about wearing that dress,” she says, laughing. “She wouldn’t approve of that dress at all.”
When it comes to fashion, West wing the alum feels that over the years she has learned what works best for her. “Yeah, I’m at a point now where I can go through my closet and get rid of stuff because now I know, yeah, I’m not going to wear it,” she says. “Now I feel like I’m really all about nice, simple, clean lines.”

Most of the time, the Oscar winner insists you can find her in “t-shirts and jeans, but that’s the most comfortable for me,” says Janney. “So simple, pared down, nothing. But I feel like I have fun with fashion when I can.”
Plus, “my stylist dresses me in beautiful dresses, which is really fun,” adds the 6-foot-5 actress. “That’s a good thing my height is for, wearing clothes.”
