New ID documentation Silence on set: The dark side of children’s television investigates alleged toxic and abusive behavior that occurred on many of Dan Schneider’s hit Nickelodeon series.

The four-part series, premiering March 17, features interviews with former cast members, writers and crew from the hit Nickelodeon series as they detail the allegedly dark environment they encountered behind the scenes.

Schneider had a long history with the children’s channel. After working at Nickelodeon in 1993 as an executive producer and writer for Allhas created numerous hit shows for the network, including The Amanda Show, Zoey 101, iCarly and Drake & Joshto name just a few.

However, following reports of his alleged on-set abuse, Nickelodeon cut ties with Schneider in March 2018. Schneider has denied allegations of wrongdoing.

As new docu-series explore Schneider’s hit Nickelodeon, here’s everything you need to know about where he is now.

Who is Dan Schneider?

Schneider is best known for his work on popular children’s series; in Silence on set: The dark side of children’s television trailer, they call him “Nickelodeon’s Golden Boy.”

After working as an actor in the 1980s, Schneider switched careers in the following decade, hooking up with Nickelodeon’s executive director of development Albie Hecht, who later offered him a job producing the sketch series. All.

In early 2018, reports of Schneider’s allegedly abusive behavior on set began to emerge, with Deadline reporting that staff members had filed “multiple complaints” on the subject. The publication also noted that Schneider was “under a cloud of suspicion over the treatment of some of the younger stars of his shows” after he posted pictures of the feet of some of the young actresses he worked with.

Los Angeles Times later reported that a ViacomCBS investigation found no evidence that Schneider engaged in sexual misconduct, but alleged that he had verbally abused staff.

In the years since, several Nickelodeon stars have come forward with claims about Schneider’s alleged behavior on set.

In his memoirs from 2022. I’m glad my mom died, Jennette McCurdy wrote about how she felt “used” as a young teenager on the set of her two hit series, both of which were hosted by Schneider. Although she never mentions Schneider by name, she refers to the person as “The Creator.”

Zoey 101 star Alexa Nikolas mentioned Schneider during her 2022 protest outside Nickelodeon headquarters, holding a poster calling him a “childhood trauma creator.”

During an interview with Business Insider published in August 2022. Victorious star Daniella Monet has opened up about how she felt “sexualized” filming certain scenes in the show, including one where she had to eat a pickle while applying lip gloss. Monet also supported claims that Schneider encouraged actors to wear “skimpier options” and “whatever was revealing.”

However, Monet pointed out that the male-dominated writers’ room was also to blame for the show’s sexualization, noting that Nickelodeon’s standards and practices department had to approve everything that aired.

Has Nickelodeon cut ties with Dan Schneider?

Amid reports of Schneider’s alleged on-set behavior, Nickelodeon parted ways with Schneider in March 2018. “After many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider’s Bakery have agreed not to extend their current arrangement” , Nickelodeon and Schneider said in a joint statement obtained by PEOPLE at the time.

“As several Schneider’s Bakery projects are coming to an end, both parties agreed that this is a natural time for Nickelodeon and Schneider’s Bakery to pursue other opportunities and projects,” the statement continued.

The statement concludes: “Dan and his Schneider’s Bakery team have created a number of enduring, ground-breaking hits over the years, including iCarly, Drake & Josh, Victorious, Kenan & Kel and currently the number one hit show on Nickelodeon, Henry Danger. We thank Dan and his Schneider’s Bakery producers, executives and social media team for their immeasurable contributions to Nickelodeon and wish them the best in their future endeavors. And Dan and Schneider’s Bakery are proud of the work they’ve done with Nickelodeon and will always be huge fans of the network.”

The specified series Henry Danger ended its fifth and final season with a new showrunner in 2020.

What did Dan Schneider say about the allegations?

In the years that followed, Schneider denied allegations of wrongdoing.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Schneider’s spokesperson said of the ID docuseries, “The reality is that many of the kids on these shows are put in the untenable position of becoming breadwinners and the pressure that comes with that. Add to that the difficulties of growing up in the spotlight doing a demanding job, all as a child. No one understood that pressure better than Dan, and that’s why he was their greatest champion.”

The statement continued: “Dan himself said that he was a difficult boss and that if he could do things over again, he would have done things differently. But let’s be clear: when Dan left Nickelodeon, a full investigation was conducted and again, all that was found was that he was a challenging, tough and demanding person to work with, nothing else.”

“As for the scenes that are now apparently being ‘sexualized’ by some people years later, every scene was approved by the network and all of those shows are still airing today. If there was a real problem, they would take them down, but they are broadcast all over the world, children and parents enjoy them.”

What is Dan Schneider doing now?

Despite parting ways with Nickelodeon in 2018, Schneider is listed as a co-creator of the series in 2020. The force of dangerwhich served as a spinoff for Henry Danger.

The following year, Schneider did an interview with The New York Timesin the story that says “[Schneider] declined to comment on the investigation,” but defended “his leadership style, denied he left [Nickelodeon] on bad terms, and described his departure as a natural turn of events after an ‘exhausting’ period in which he delivered as many as 50 episodes of series each year.”

He also noted in the interview that during the hiatus, he “took a break to take care of a lot of things that I had left to the wayside for decades,” revealing that he had lost 100 pounds.

At the time, he said he was working on a new pilot for another network, which he described as “ambitious and very different” from anything he’s done, and would be aimed at a “more mature audience”. In addition, he said he is working on another pilot aimed at children and their families.

For now, there is no more news about the two pilots.
