Hotel Guest Wonders If They ‘Crossed a Line’ After ‘Snapping’ at Receptionist Who Gave Them the Wrong Room 3 Times

A hotel guest is wondering if their recent outburst was justified after the receptionist allegedly gave him the wrong room type three times.

In a retelling of the incident shared on the popular subreddit AmItheA–hole (AITA), the passenger explains that they stayed at a “pretty nice hotel” and that they “paid extra extra” for a room with a king bed and a city view.

The original poster (OP) explains that they didn’t react the first time they got the wrong room, despite being inconvenienced during what they hoped was a “relaxing getaway”.

“When I checked in, they gave me a room with two twin beds and a view of the parking lot,” explains the Reddit user. “I went back to the front desk, politely explained the problem, and they apologized, saying there was a mix-up.”

The receptionist then gave them the key to the new room, but the hotel guest quickly discovered another problem.

“When I got to that room, it was still not right – this time it was a double bed with no view. I was annoyed, but I kept my cool and went back to the table again. They apologized again and assured me that the next room would be correct.”

However, OP’s new room was even worse than the two previous rooms, they write.

“The third room wasn’t even cleaned yet — there were towels on the floor and an unmade bed.”

Hotel guests explain that they were “exhausted and frustrated” by the ordeal and felt they had to confront the receptionist because he messed up the third time.

“I went back to the reception and shot the receptionist. I didn’t shout or swear, but I raised my voice and told them that it was ridiculous that I couldn’t get the room I paid for in three attempts,” they explain. “The receptionist looked confused and said they were doing their best, but I wasn’t really in the mood to hear that.”

While the OP says it all worked out and they even ended up being moved to an apartment, they later questioned the way they treated the receptionist after sharing their experience with a friend.

“When I told my friend about the situation, they said that I had exaggerated and that it was not the fault of the receptionist because they do not control the allocation of rooms. I feel I was right to be upset, but now I wonder if I crossed the line. AITA?”

In the comments section, many users agreed that the hotel guest was right to call out the receptionist’s multiple mistakes.

“As a former hotel receptionist, they are literally the only ones who control the allocation of rooms. You have every right to be upset. Three times is absurd,” one person wrote.

Another added: “After three mistakes, it’s reasonable to expect better service and express your frustration. The receptionist should have handled it better.”

Another user suggested what might have caused the confusion.

“Receptionists are assigning rooms, they probably just overbooked that type of room and figured you’d either just accept the first room without complaining or give up after 2-3 times and accept one of them.”
