Allison Janney reveals how she reacted when she saw one particular script for Diplomat.
During the performance at Jimmy Kimmel Live! On Nov. 4, Janney, 64, explained that when she first read the script for the political thriller’s second season finale, she had an instinctive reaction. By the time she reached the end, she had done something she had “never” done before.
“I literally threw the script across the room,” admitted the actress. “It was like, ‘What?’ Because it was so explosive, so amazing — everyone has to drink the whole season because I’m only in the last two episodes. It’s such a spectacular ending, I shudder to think about it.”
Why Diplomat It gets a shorter season 2 of 6 episodes
Janney’s appearance at Diplomat, although short, it excited fans and cast members alike when it was first released Diversity in January.
She plays Vice President Grace Penn in the series, which follows US ambassador to the UK Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) as they try to prevent a global war.

In October, Russell, who is also an executive producer Diplomat, admitted to PEOPLE during a special event for the 2024 PaleyFest performance that she was “a little nervous” when she heard about Janney’s participation in the performance.
“Just because she’s great and so good,” he said Felicity star, 48, said. “I love her. There’s a scene where she acts Primary colors — that movie is so good — where she does this physical comedy thing of falling down the stairs. So I think I was a little nervous, but she’s everything you want her to be. She’s kind and funny, smart and cool.”
While Russell joked that she “tried to keep it cool at first,” she ended up confessing her love for the movie Janney.

Diplomat and west wing, in which Janney starred, share host, Deborah Cahn. At the same event, Cahn explained to PEOPLE that she didn’t want Janney’s appearance in yet another political series to “feel like a gimmick,” and worried that she wouldn’t be able to create a “clear” new character for the actress.

“I learned a lot of the way I write writing for Allison,” Cahn said. “So there are certain things that I hear coming from her beats, so they’re in all these characters. I just don’t want it to feel like it’s all the same.”
Cahn admitted that at the time she was “scared” to write for Janney again.
“I went into complete immobilized panic for a couple of weeks when the first big Allison episode came because it just felt like so much was important and I wanted it to be good,” she revealed. “I wanted it to be good for her and I wanted it to be worthy of these guys in terms of what she brought to the table,” she said of the show’s cast.
