Alonzo Mourning was known for his brilliant biceps throughout his career. When opponents tried to rush the rim while he was in charge of it, he would simply deflect their shots and constantly throw defenders setting up picks with his strong shoulders.
But there was a man who had to endure numerous challenges to achieve his goal behind that fierce guy.
Mourning himself wrote an article in 2013 titled “Letter to My Younger Self” in which he spoke of the “angels” who supported him through the struggles of his life.
Mourning spoke about the many angels who have influenced his life, but singled out three in particular: Jason Cooper, Ms. Fannie Threet and former Georgetown head coach John Thompson.
Mourning chose foster care after his parents divorced when he was a child because he couldn’t decide which parent to live with because he loved them both. Mourning left the group home and was placed in the care of Mrs. Threet. Over the years, Threet, a retired teacher, has fostered 49 children, including Mourning. There was also Big John, Zo’s father figure and the one who brought her to life.
There was also her cousin Jason, who eventually helped Zo when she needed to donate a kidney. When they were little boys in Chesapeake, Mourning and Cooper, who was a little older than Cooper, played together. They hadn’t spoken or seen each other in 25 years, but when Cooper learned that Zo was retiring from the NBA due to kidney problems, he told Zo’s father during a chance meeting at the hospital that he wanted to “help in any way I can.”

Over time, the condition worsened, necessitating a kidney transplant. Numerous family members and friends underwent compatibility tests. Patrick Ewing was on the list, but Jason was the most qualified candidate. In December 2003, Mourning underwent kidney surgery at a New York hospital.
