Amarjot Kaur is a famous Indian singer in the Punjabi music industry. She is popular for her stage performances with Punjabi singer and her husband Amar Singh Chamkila. Her husband and his death have remained a mystery since his assassination in 1988 in Mehsampur, Jalandhar district, Punjab.

Amarjot Kaur was born in Dogar Basti in Faridkot, Punjab. She completed her matriculation studies from Faridkot. As her father lived in Lok Sampark Vibhag, many singers often visited their house and by meeting them, Amajyot became interested in singing.

Amarjot Kaur sang with many popular singers of the time such as Pyara Singh Panchi, Karnail Gill and Dhana Singh Dhana Singh Rangila. Her songs “Ajj Parcha Science Da Mera” and “Kachi Nind Na Jageye” with Pyara Singh Panchi were hits. She collaborated with Kuldeep Manak for nearly four years and recorded an LP with him; among which the songs “Ik Mai Hova Ik Tu Hove” and “Lae Gya Meri Jind Kadh Ke” were the most popular. Kuldeep Manak suggested Amarjot to work with Amar Singh Chamkila as he was looking for a permanent female singer. The couple started singing together and became famous not only in Punjab but also mesmerized people internationally with their catchy and witty lyrics. They have sung many super hit songs like “Ki Jor Gariban Da”, “Kan Kar Gal Sun Makhna”, “Gora Gora Rang” and many more. Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila are popular and have recorded many LPs with HMV. They have also performed on international stages in Canada, Dubai and Bahrain. On March 8, 1988, Amarjot Kaur and her husband Amar Singh Chamkila were identified as they were getting out of their car to attend an event in Mehsampur. Shot to death by unknown assailants. Subsequently, the police launched an investigation but failed to arrest the perpetrator, leaving the case without any conclusion. The murders of Amarjot and Chamkila remain a mystery to this day. There are many theories about the murder of Amarjot and Chimakira. Some sources claim they were murdered by militants because of the use of double meanings and explicit lyrics in their songs, while others say the couple’s assassination was due to dissatisfaction with other emerging singers in the music industry, who they say for “contract killing.” Some other sources believe that the murders of Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila were honor killings as Amarjot belonged to an upper caste and Chamkila Belonging to a Scheduled Caste, Amarjot’s parents planned to kill them. The real cause of his death could never be deciphered.

- Late producer Gurdev Singh Randhawa planned to make a film on Amarjot Kaur’s husband Amar Singh Chamkila Singh Chamkila; however, it was never made. According to Randhawa’s sons, Chamkila’s widow Gurmail Kaur handed over the rights to make the Chamkila biopic to their father in October 2012; however, , after Randhawa’s death in November 2022, there were reports that Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali was working on a Chamkila biopic starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. Later, Randhawa’s son approached the court to ban the release of the biopic produced by Imtiaz Ali.
