America Ferrera Calls Barbie a ‘Bold and Inspiring Masterpiece’ as She Wins People’s Choice Award

America Ferrera continues to celebrate Barbie at Sunday’s 2024 People’s Choice Awards.

Billie Eilish presented the actress, 39, with the award for film performance of the year, and Ferrera joked that she only attended the event to befriend the “What am I made for?” a singer.

“I’m only here because I want Billie Eilish to be my best friend. Billie, what do you say?” she was joking.

“Oh my God, thank you to everyone who voted for me and voted yes Barbie. Whether you saw it Barbie at the movies once or 20 times, I know there are some of you — thank you for showing up with your friends and family all dressed in your fabulous pink,” Ferrera said.

Ferrera also took a moment in her speech to “thank the incomparable Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie,” who directed and starred in the film. “Yes, yes, yes, all the flowers to Greta and Margot for inviting me to represent the entire human race in Barbie Land,” she added. “You’re welcome. I hope I made you proud.”

“It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of such a brave and inspiring masterpiece and speak the words of truth that so many of us needed to hear out loud,” Ferrera said in her speech. noting that it is Barbie the film “is a call to all of us to embrace ourselves as we already are; uniquely, magnificently and perfectly human.”

Other actors nominated alongside Ferrera for movie performance of the year included her Barbie costar Sim Liu, May December‘s Charles Melton and Natalie Portman, Danielle Brooks from Purple, SaltburnJacob Elordi, Melissa McCarthy from Little Mermaid and Airis Viola Davis.

Ferrera is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards in March for her role as Gloria, one of the few characters in the film who is neither Barbie nor Ken.

Barbie received a total of eight nominations at this year’s People’s Choice Awards — the same number of nods as it received from the Oscars — and three nominations for the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
