Sim Liu couldn’t resist teasing fellow 2024 awards season host Jo Koy during his monologue at the People’s Choice Awards on Sunday.
In Liu’s keynote speech at this week’s ceremony, he touched on the biggest, loudest party of the past year, including Taylor Swift, Oppenheimer and Barbie (in which he starred).
“Oppenheimer showed us that a three-hour drama about the moral complexities of creating an atomic bomb could be a huge financial success … as long as it came out on the same day as Barbie,” joked the actor, 34.
He also appeared to address the mixed reviews Koy received after hosting last month’s Golden Globes, joking: “An Asian host of a major awards show – what could possibly go wrong?”

Swift, 34, i Barbie both were nominated in several categories. And Liu wasted no time joking: “Who could forget that little movie about a blonde American icon that got the whole country dressed up, dancing the night away and making big waves at the box office? I’m talking, of course, about [the] Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie.”
“I was a Swiftie long before I was a Ken,” he added, in response to an expectation that he would name Barbie from the description of the film.
Liu played Ken Barbie among the film’s large cast. He plays Ken’s rival Ryan Gosling’s Ken, who clash in the highly popular and acclaimed film directed by Greta Gerwig. Liu himself was nominated for film performance of the year alongside him Barbie Costar America Ferrera at Sunday’s awards show.

Lenny Kravitz will receive the People’s Music Icon Award at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards.
The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings the actor is also a big fan of Swift – he said recently Diversity that he became attached to the pop star’s music after he started dating his girlfriend Allison Hsu.
“If you really appreciate the lyricism of her deep songs on the album — like ‘The Great War,’ ‘Daylight,’ ‘Out of the Woods’ — if you go deeper and deeper, these are incredible songs about heartbreak, about relationships,” he said. Liu. “If you’re able to appreciate that broader scope of songwriting… then you’re a Swiftie. I’m Swiftie.”
The actor even mentioned Swift’s trip from Tokyo to Las Vegas to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce play in the 2024 Super Bowl in his Valentine’s Day Instagram post for Hsu.
“I would fly from Tokyo to your super bowl any day ;),” he wrote in the caption of that post. Liu appeared at the premiere of the film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film back in October, both he and Hsu attended Swift’s tour in Seattle in July 2023.
