America Ferrera shares her holiday traditions.
The actress, 39, opened up exclusively to PEOPLE on ELLE A celebration of women in Hollywood in LA on Tuesday about how putting up a Christmas tree in her new New York home is both a good thing and a bad thing.
“Putting up my tree is equal parts frustrating disaster and beautiful joy,” she tells PEOPLE.
“The first year I lived in New York, I brought my own tree home. It was a small tree,” she adds. “Obviously I’m a little person, but I felt like an adult going down to this bodega on the corner, buying my Christmas tree, going home and decorating it.”
“And now I can do it with my kids,” she says. “[But] I can’t carry it because we have a bigger tree.”

Ferrera — who shares son Sebastian Piers, 5, and daughter Lucia Marisol, 3, with her husband, actor-director Ryan Piers Williams — adds that while she hasn’t put up her Christmas tree yet, she will “as soon as I get home.”
The Ugly Betty Alumina’s holiday revelations come after she recently opened up about Hollywood’s view of her body throughout her career.
In an interview with ELLE for their Women in Hollywood 2023 issue last month, she said it was “crazy” that her “very average-sized body” was considered “curvy”, adding that she was “Hollywood’s version of imperfection, which looks so ridiculous”.

The actress also told the outlet that she never wanted to be an inspiration because of her career choice.
“I didn’t set out to be a role model, or break down barriers, or have a career defying the norm. I just wanted to be an actress,” she said.
