Amit Agrawal is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of 1993-batch Chhattisgarh cadre. He has held several important positions at the Center as well as in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. On June 20, 2023, he became the CEO of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Amit Agrawal was born on Saturday, June 27, 1970, in Uttar Pradesh, India (53 years old as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Cancer. Amit Agrawal started his career on June 22, 1994 as Assistant Collector, General Administration Department. He held this post till January 1, 1996, after which he was promoted to the rank of Divisional Officer (SDO), General Administration Department at Gwalior. About six months into his tenure, Amit was transferred to Jhabua where he worked for about a year. From June 23, 1997 to September 25, 2000, Amit held the important role of Chief Executive Officer in the Panchayat and Rural Development Department, specifically the Dhar District Panchayat. Thereafter, on September 28, 2000, he served as Mission Director, Rural Development Department, Bhopal. During his tenure, he spearheaded the Watershed Mission and worked to achieve its goals. Amit then served as Deputy Secretary in the General Administration Department and Information Technology Department in Raipur. He held these positions before being appointed as District Collector, General Administration Department, Mahasamund on July 1, 2001. Amit held this position till June 27, 2002. After serving as District Collector, Amit took up the post of Secretary, Union Technical Education and Manpower Planning Department, Raipur, where he worked for about eight months. Thereafter, he held various senior positions within the Chhattisgarh government. These include serving as CEO of the Department of Information Technology and Department of Biotechnology, Raipur, and as Joint Secretary of both departments. Additionally, he served as Joint Secretary, Finance and later held the charge of Managing Director and OSD for the same department. On July 8, 2004, he took up the Central Delegation and served as Deputy Secretary-General in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Delhi. He served in this position for approximately three years before being appointed Director of the Project Management Office. While in Delhi, he also served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council from January 6 to November 27, 2012. On September 6, 2013, he was appointed as Secretary, Technical Education Department in Raipur. Later, he served as Commissioner, Commercial Tax Department, Raipur and as Secretary, Finance and Commercial Tax Department, Raipur.

On December 26, 2016, Amit Agrawal embarked on his second trip to the Center, this time as Joint Minister, Finance, in New Delhi. He devoted about four years to this position. Thereafter, he served as Additional Finance Minister from November 3, 2020 to May 22, 2022. Subsequently, Agrawal served as Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) from May 23, 2022 to June 11, 2023.

Agrawal is widely regarded as an expert in the field of information technology and e-government. During his tenure, he played a key role in innovative initiatives and was actively involved in the development of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill. The bill is expected to be considered in Parliament in 2023. On June 20, 2023, he was appointed CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as part of a major bureaucracy reshuffle by the Narendra Modi government. He succeeds Saurabh Garg as CEO of UIDAI. As per orders of the Ministry of Personnel, Agrawal assumed the duties and emoluments of Additional Secretary to the Government of India. Apart from his role at UIDAI, he also serves as Chairman of the National Digital Communications Policy Committee. He also serves as non-executive chairman of the National Informatics Center Services Corporation and a director on the boards of the National Institute for Smart Government and the Indian Data Security Council.
