Who was Stockton Rush?

Stockton Rush, born Richard Stockton Rush III, was an American businessman widely known as the co-founder and CEO of OceanGate, a deep-sea exploration company. Tragically, on June 18, 2023, Rush lost his life, along with four others, during an expedition on OceanGate’s submarine, the Titan. The mission was to visit the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic.

Early Rush came from a wealthy family and was born in San Francisco. Stockton Rush was born the youngest of five siblings to Richard Stockton Rush, Jr., who came from Philadelphia, and Ellen Rush (née Davies), born in San Francisco. It is worth mentioning that his maternal grandfather’s name was Ralph K. Davies, while his grandmother, Louise Davies, was a philanthropist known for being the Louise M.

Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco is named after her. Rush had ancestral ties to two of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Richard Stockton and Benjamin Rush, through his father’s line.

During his youth, Rush harbored aspirations of becoming an astronaut and being the first person to set foot on Mars. He showed a keen interest in aviation and water activities, embarking on scuba diving adventures at the age of 12 and obtaining his commercial pilot’s license by 18. However, due to concerns about his visual acuity, he was informed that pursuing a career as a military pilot would be unattainable.

Despite this, his passion for aviation remained, and he even earned his DC-8 Type/Captain rating at the United Airlines Jet Training Institute when he was just 19 years old.

Rush’s educational journey began at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he graduated in 1980. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Princeton University, graduating in 1984. In 1989, he further expanded his knowledge and skills by earning a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

Stockton Rush was the CEO and founder of OceanGate Inc, a prominent deep-sea exploration company. Since its founding in 2009, Rush has played a key role in leading OceanGate’s financial and engineering strategies.
