After completing his formal education, he started his career in 2000 as an Assistant Manager at ICICI Bank, Mumbai. In October 2001, he started working as a Business Analyst at Credit Agricole. He joined HSBC in 2003 and retired as deputy president in 2010. From July 2010 to June 2012, he served as Vice President, Global Treasury Sales, Southern Region, at Bank of America, Bangalore. In 2015, he moved to Delhi and became the head of the BJP’s IT cell. In this capacity, he oversees the party’s social media presence. His association with the BJP dates back to 2009, when he was a banker. That year, he co-founded the Forum Friends of the People’s Party, launching a text message campaign to promote the party and bring it to power. Other founding members include Rajesh Jain, managing director of Mumbai-based IT firm Net Core Solutions, and financial advisor Piyush Goel. They urge people to join the group at www.friendsofbjp.org. A public meeting arranged in Lucknow brought Malviya to prominence. Ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP appointed Malviya as co-chief to oversee party affairs in the state. He is co-author with Salman Khurshid of the book The Citizenship Debate: CAA and NRC (2020).

A series of disinformation campaigns
Malviya has often been accused of spreading misinformation and peddling fake news through the BJP’s social media accounts. In January 2020, Amit Malviya shared a video on his Twitter account in which a group of men talked about the Shaheen Bagh protesters. The video shows women protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh receiving money. One of the men in the video further claimed that the protest was “sponsored” by the Congress party. A joint investigation by fact-checking websites Alt News and Newslaundry found the accusations to be baseless.

Two days after the “Sponsor Shaheen Bagh Protest” video, a photo of an elderly Muslim man eating biryani in Shaheen Bagh was shared with the caption:
Evidence of biryani being distributed in Shaheen Bagh! “
The suggestion of eating at a protest site was deemed “bizarre” by multiple media outlets. Alt News has since started monitoring his social media presence and found that Malviya has repeatedly used misinformation to discredit individuals, communities, opposition parties, leaders and movements. In December 2019, Malviya claimed that slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad” were raised during an anti-CAA rally at Lucknow Clock Tower. Alt News clarified that the protesters did not raise pro-Pakistan slogans but said “Kashif Saab Zindabad”. Kashif Ahmed, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, reportedly led the anti-CAA protests in Lucknow.

On December 16, 2019, he posted a video of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, claiming that they raised slogans against Hindus. His caption read:

Translated is “The graves of Hindus will be dug in the chest of AMU.”

However, Alt News clarified that the students were actually shouting slogans against Hindutva, Savarkar, BJP, Brahminism and casteism. They shouted,

In January 2020, he shared a video of Alpha Khanum delivering a speech at Aligarh Muslim University, which was edited and distorted. Malviya alleged that Alpha Khanum encouraged CAA protesters “only if non-Muslims Be inclusive before they start accepting their religious identity, beliefs and supremacist slogans as gospel. Instead, Alt News explains, Arfa urged protesters to use more secular means to protest against the CAA. In 2017, Malviya shared the former A collage of photos of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru with multiple women, portraying him as an immoral man. Apparently, Malviya took a dig at the Congress leader, claiming that Hardik Patel Hardik Patel, whose sex tape went viral on the internet in November 2017, shares the same DNA as Jawaharlal Nehru.

Later, Alt News clarified that most of the photos were of Jawaharlal Nehru and his sister or niece. The tweet sparked huge criticism against Malviya on social media and he came under severe attack from various netizens.

Sue “The Wire”
In October 2022, Amit Malviya filed an FIR against The Wire, accusing it of “tarnishing his reputation”. Founder Siddharth Vardajaran and editors Siddharth Bhatia, MK Venu and Jahnavi Sen were booked by the Delhi Police under Sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 469 (forgery to damage reputation), 471 (Fraud) was registered. Sections 500 (defamation), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of IPC. The Wire claimed in a series of news reports that have since been retracted that Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, granted Malviya special privileges to remove any content he deemed critical of the company. The tweet shows a farmer being charged with lathi during the 2020-2021 farmers’ protest in India. Later, Amit Malviya posted a tweet comparing two visuals, questioning Rahul’s claims – the first visual was an image posted by Rahul Gandhi , the image was labeled “Propaganda,” and the second visual was a caption titled “Reality,” claiming that the police had not even touched the farmer.

In December 2020, Twitter labeled Amit Malviya’s tweets as “manipulated media” under its synthetic and manipulated media policy. Apparently, fact-checking website Boom spoke to the farmer in the photo, Sukhdev Singh, and confirmed that he was injured in the police allegation.
Allegations of Subramanian Swamy
In September 2020, the BJP’s Subramanian Swamy accused Amit Malviya of using fake tweets to campaign against him. Swamy also issued an ultimatum to the party, demanding the removal of the Malviya BJP IT cell chief. Swamy said the removal of Malviya was a “compromise suggestion” he made to party president Nadda. He said if Malviya was not removed from office, it would mean the party was not willing to “defend me”. Despite the ultimatum, the BJP reappointed Malviya as the party’s IT cell chief. Following this, Swami posted a tweet which read:
Now that Malaviya has been reappointed, I have this to say: My previous tweet was to test whether Malviya was funding the fake ID tweets himself. It’s clear now. PMO Haren Joshi is the man behind it. I wrote to the Prime Minister about two weeks ago and attached documents to bring this to his attention. “
Lawsuit filed against Rahul Gandhi over tweets
On June 28, 2023, the Indian National Congress party filed a complaint against Malviya, accusing him of mocking Rahul Gandhi through tweets. Malviya tweeted,

Controversial remarks about Sachin Pilot’s father
In August 2023, Amit Malviya made controversial remarks against Sachin Pilot’s father, claiming that he bombed Mizoram on March 5, 1966 , when he was still serving as a pilot in the Indian Air Force. Amit made this claim through a post on X and wrote:
On March 5, 1966, Indian Air Force planes piloted by Rajesh Pilot and Suresh Kalmadi bombed Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram state. Both later became members of parliament and government ministers. It is clear that Indira Gandhi respected and had a place in politics as a reward for those who carried out air raids on her own people in the Northeast. “
In response, Sachin later issued a certificate, which his father had received from President VV Giri when he was commissioned as a pilot in the Indian Air Force on February 10, 1970. He pointed out inaccuracies in Malviya’s post, stressing that his father did carry out bombing campaigns, but that was in East Pakistan during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, not Mizoram.
