Amit Singh Thakur worked as a child actor at the age of 8 in the film Upaasna starring Sanjay Khan and Mumtaz. After working in theater for a while, he later tried to find work in films and shot a few scenes opposite Juhi Chawla in the film Kaafila; however, the film took over five years to make Complete, Amit starts losing his hair, ending his hopes of becoming a hero. He later acted in several films such as Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Aankhen, Ajay Devgn-starrer Aarakshan and Saif Ali Khan-starrer Race 3.

After an unsuccessful film career, he began appearing in television series in 1996. He has acted in many TV series such as “X-Zone”, “Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand”, “Dhoondte Reh Jaoge”, “Daayan”, “Mai” and “Bohot Pyaar Karte Hai”. He has appeared in more than 72 TV series. In 2011, he decided to take a break from television because he was tired of similar roles he was playing. Later he started working as an actor in different TV series.

In 2011, he ventured into the world of production and started working as the Deputy Director of Operations at Shashi Sumeet Productions Private Limited. In 2013, he was promoted to head of operations at the same company. In 2015, he was promoted again to executive vice president of production and promotional films; however, he resigned from his job in 2017 due to health problems. After his recovery, he started his own TV commercial production company, AST Entertainment and Hospitality, and his first TV commercial was that of Kaun Banega Crorepati.

- Amit Singh Thakur wanted to be a Bollywood hero; however, his dream was dashed when he lost his hair in his 20s. Even after trying expensive hair loss treatments, his hair never grew back.
- Amit Singh Thakur plays Pakistan’s first Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan in the documentary series “Samvidhaan” directed by Indian director Shyam Benegal and India in the documentary “Khaar” Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.
