All about Operation Amotekun
Amotekun is a regional security unit established in six states of southwestern Nigeria. Established on January 9, 2020 in Ibadan, Oyo State, it is the first regional security initiative undertaken by a geopolitical zone in Nigeria. The name “Amotekun” originates from the Yoruba language, meaning “He who looks like a leopard”. Although the word for leopard is actually “amotekun”, it is often misinterpreted as “leopard”, rather than referring to a cheetah. Regardless, the code name “Operation Amotekun” is widely used.
The establishment of Amotekun was the result of a joint decision by the six governors of Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti states during the regional security summit held in Ibadan in June 2019, with the support of the Western Nigeria Development Agenda Commission (ZORA). The outfit was created to address the burning issue of insecurity in the region.
To support Amotekun, each of the six state governments contributed 20 vehicles, except Oyo State which provided 33 vehicles. In addition, each country procured 100 units of motorcycles, for a total of 600 motorcycles. The security force is made up of personnel from local hunters, Oodu People’s Congress (OPC), Agbekoye, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and vigilante groups.
Amotekun’s primary objective is to assist the police, other security agencies and traditional rulers in combating various forms of criminal activities such as terrorism, banditry, armed robbery and kidnapping. Furthermore, clothing plays a key role in mediating disputes between pastoralists and farmers in the region. Operating in approximately 52 identified high-risk areas across the southwest, Amotekun operatives are equipped with day rifles, similar to those used by local hunters.
Amotekun represents a significant step towards strengthening security and curbing criminal activities in the South West region of Nigeria. By collaborating with existing security agencies and engaging local communities, it aims to create a safer environment for residents while fostering peace and harmony among different groups.
