Amrit Kaur’s character on Sexual life of female students she may have the funniest lines on the show, but the actress herself is pretty good at keeping a straight face — until her costars screw up, that is.
The 31-year-old Canadian actress stars in the hit series Max alongside Reneé Rapp, Pauline Chalamet and Alyah Chanelle Scott, and tells PEOPLE that it’s usually only her beloved co-stars who make it difficult for her to perform her famous songs.
“Actually, I don’t break down that much. I break down more when other people break down, so when I say something and someone laughs, and then I’m like [laughing],” says Kaur, who plays Bela Malholtra, before sharing a scene from Season 3 that was particularly difficult to sit through.

In the season premiere, Bela, Leighton (Rapp) and Whitney (Scott) are having lunch together when Leighton declines an invitation from his girlfriend Alicia (Midori Francis). Bela asks if the move is a way of “validating your alpha-dom-femme-top energy? Making sure she knows you’re the ‘mother’?”
“Bela! Stop using gay slang,” Leighton tells her.

Recalling the “gay slang” scene, Kaur says, “We had to do it so many times because Reneé and Alyah couldn’t stop laughing.
“I like to make people laugh, I say, ‘Yeah, I’m hitting a note,’ but it was hard [to get through].”

It’s easy for Kaur to get “inspired” when she plays Bella, who showrunner Justin Noble jokingly tells PEOPLE is “the thirstiest person in the history of television.”
“When I open the script, I’m immediately reminded of what’s more in Bela than in me,” says the actress, reflecting on Bela’s “characteristics that are amplified” compared to her.
“Constantly trying to make people laugh, transgressions, boldness, fearlessness, everything [of that] I have, but Bela has it tenfold.”

Kaur also sees parts of herself in Bela’s Season 3 storyline, in which she is “trying to atone for past mistakes.”
“She had so much freedom and had just left home, so she thought the world was her oyster,” Kaur says of the character in seasons 1 and 2, who had an “I don’t care about anybody else” mindset.
“And now he’s dealing with the consequences,” she says. “She’s going through this process of coming to terms and learning who she really is — what she believes, who she is in her bones.”

Returning for a third season was “humbling,” says Kaur.
“To be the lead in the show and to be in that unique position is fantastic. It’s a huge honor,” she says. “And after the third season, there’s a rhythm, there’s a rhythm with everything. So it’s a great privilege. I’m so grateful.”
