Amruta belongs to a Marathi Hindu family. She is a belated daughter. Subhas Chandra Dembre and Jyoti Subhas. Her mother is a famous actress in the Marathi film industry. She has a brother named Jay Subhash.
She is married to her long-time boyfriend Sandesh Kulkarni. He is a renowned director and writer of Marathi plays and films. They first met when Amruta was 17 years old. She went to Sandesh Kulkarni’s house to meet his sister Sonali Kulkarni.
Profession
She started her acting career in 1997 with the play Urvashiam. Tee Furani, an adaptation of My Fair Lady Amruta, came into the limelight with her drama.
In 2000, she appeared in the Marathi television series “Zoka”. Her first big project was the 2004 Marathi film “Shwaas”. The film was a huge hit and won the National Award for “Best Feature Film”. This was India’s Oscar entry of the year. After that, she made her debut in the Bollywood film “Chausar” in 2004. She made her debut with the album Jata Jata Pawasane (2014).
She has acted in many Marathi plays, TV series and films. She has worked with her mother in many films, one of which is “Gandha”. In this movie, her biological mother plays the role of her reel mother. The film was a huge hit and was later adapted into the Bollywood film Aiyya, starring Rani Mukerji and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
She participated in the ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Marathi’ competition for celebrities and made it to the top five. She is a trained classical singer who has lent her voice to several films.
She published a book in 2014 titled Ek Ulat Ek Sulat.
She appeared in Bollywood films Raman Raghav 2.0 and Gully Boy. Her acting skills were highly recognized by “Gully Boy” director Zoya Akhtar. In an interview, she revealed that Zoya Akhtar was so fascinated by her acting that she didn’t audition for the film Gully Boy.
In 2018, she starred in the web series Selection Day, based on the novel by Aravind Adiga. It is produced by Anil Kapoor and Anand Tucker. Although she has appeared in many movies and TV series, she considers theater to be her first love.
She is also a social activist and the brand ambassador of Zee Marathi Jagruti.
She was invited to star in the 2019 popular web drama “Sacred Games 2”. In Vikram Chandra’s original novel, Amruta’s character was male, but she managed to play the role effectively. She plays a Kenyan Raw agent in the web series.
