Amy Adams Almost Didn't Guest on The Office Because She Looked Too Much Like Jenna Fischer

Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey take a second look at Amy Adams’ first season guest appearance Office and revealing new details — including the fact that the future Oscar nominee almost lost her performance because she looked too much like Fischer.

In the latest episode of their podcast rewatch Office ladiesFischer and Kinsey revisited the first season finale of the hit NBC sitcom, “Hot Girl”. The 2005 episode focused on the shenanigans that ensue when Adams’ character, Katy, shows up at the Dunder Mifflin office trying to sell fake handbags, and the show’s male characters all vie for her attention.

Fischer and Kinsey previously reprized “Hot Girl” in 2019, but on their Dec. 18 episode, they previewed a special extended version of “Superfan,” currently available to stream on Peacock.

As Fischer noted, in their original summary the duo confirmed that Adams was the writer of “Hot Girls” and Office star Mindy Kaling first choice for the role. “But what we didn’t share,” Fischer revealed, “was that Amy Adams wasn’t the first person to be cast.”

“Originally, we shot ‘Hot Girl’ all day with a completely different actress playing Katy. And unfortunately, she just wasn’t right for the role,” she continued. “They had to let her go. We replaced her with Amy.”

“I remember when Amy came on set, she was so flawlessly Katy,” Kinsey said. “She improvises a lot, people. We’ll get to that. But many of her improvements succeed. She just knew who that woman was.”

Fischer added that casting director Allison Jones shared that Adams, who has previously appeared in films such as Drop Dead Gorgeous, Catch me if you can and Date of weddingshe’s actually everyone’s first choice to play Katy.

“But there was a concern that Amy and I looked too similar,” explained Fischer. “I guess one of the writers even said, ‘I’m sorry. We can’t fake it. She’s like Jenna 2.0.’ And so they cooled down and put someone else in.”

One of the episode’s subplots involved the show’s male characters comparing Katy’s appearance to that of Fischer’s character, Pam. When the original casting for the role fell through and Adams was brought in, the show’s writers decided to rely on the fact that she and Fischer look alike. According to Fischer, Steve Carell’s line describing Katy as “Pam 6.0” in the episode is a direct reference to the “Jenna 2.0” behind-the-scenes commentary.
