From seafaring skills to their famous god of thunder, the history of the Vikings contains countless things to be fascinated by. Thousands of centuries later, none have captured as much interest as their ancient alphabet. These alphabets are made up of intricate Viking runes that are believed to have a mystical and powerful meaning. Whether you’re curious about the history of Viking runes, intrigued by the meaning of each symbol, or looking for ways to use them in your life and spiritual practices, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s dive into the sea of Viking lore.
- Each Viking rune has a specific symbol, name, meaning and energy.
- Viking runes come from two Norse scripts: Old Futhark and Younger Futhark. Both are important, but the younger Futhark was used more in the Viking Age.
- Viking runes are thought to have mystical powers that can be used for divination, protection, meditation and astrology.
Do a meditation exercise. Find a rune you like and create a meditation rune card by following these steps:[6]
- Use a small piece of white paper, about 3 in × 5 in (7.6 cm × 12.7 cm).
- Color the selected rune on the card bright red.
- Get comfortable with the card at eye level.
- Start breathing evenly at a rhythm you can maintain.
- Focus on the shape of the rune and chant the name silently three times.
- Pause, then chant again three times. Repeat this process all the time.
- Concentrate on the shape of the rune, the sound, and your breath and posture.
- After a few minutes, close your eyes and imagine the shape.
- Continue practicing until you can meditate this way for ten minutes.
Predict the future with divination. Carve each rune into an individual piece of wood. Throw the runes on the white cloth and note which runes fall straight. Some people believe that the combined meanings of these runes tell about your life and future.[7]
- In modern practice, people often use runic divination sets or tarot cards with runes.[8]
Use the runes to make a good luck talisman or amulet. Create a traditional runic talisman by carving a rune into wood, bone, stone or metal, or write it on paper. Wear a runic necklace as an amulet for good luck and protection.
- If the object with the inscription has a functional purpose, such as a pen or a car, the runes are thought to bring success in any way the object is used.[9]
Use your date of birth to find your first birth rune. Birth Runes are based on the Elder Futhark alphabet. This rune is also called the solar rune. [10]

Put the runes together to find the meaning. The combined meaning of your two birth runes is thought to describe the energy of your identity, life and spirit. This practice is called runic astrology, but it is different from zodiac astrology.[12]
- While zodiac signs and horoscopes aim to describe your destiny and future, birth runes are meant to tell you what energy is behind your personality and life events.
- Birth runes and runic astrology have their origins in Norse folklore, but are still popular in today’s Scandinavia.
