Andrew Dice Clay Shares How Bradley Cooper Cast Him as Lady Gaga’s Father in A Star Is Born

Andrew Dice Clay owes his supporting role to 2018 A star is born to a chance encounter.

Ace Dice, 65, recently appeared on comedian Chris DiStefano’s podcast Chrissy Chaosrevealed that his appearance in Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut as Lady Gaga’s character’s father ended up happening after he bumped into Cooper, 48, at legendary Los Angeles nightclub The Troubadour.

“As I was leaving, I passed Bradley Cooper and said, ‘By the way, you were good at [American] Sniper“ ” the legendary comic recalled. “And his mother grabbed me and said: ‘Not so fast, where are you going?’ ”

Dice said Cooper’s mother, Gloria Campano, told him the Cooper family were fans of his comedy, and that he left the club after telling Cooper, “I just want to say I think you’re a great actor.”

Sometime after that interaction, the comedian said he was approached by his manager Bruce Rubenstein A star is born producer Todd Phillips and “sends them this email saying, ‘Dice is a freakishly great actor.’ ”

“Suddenly we got a call, Bradley Cooper wants to sit with me, because he met me in [The Troubadour]. And I was talking all about my sons, and we’re sitting there for three hours,” says Dice. The day after that meeting, Dice said Cooper texted him and asked him to meet up with Gaga, 37, while she was recording music for her role as newly minted superstar Ally.

“We’re talking about being on tour and I said I’ve been doing what you’d do and she knew all about it – her dad Joey’s a big fan,” said Dice, before claiming he sat on the drums to at least one song featured in the film.

“And suddenly [Gaga’s] the assistant is behind me with the iPad and I played the dumb song as intended,” he continued. “While this is happening, Cooper comes in and watches this. And he says: ‘Let’s go to another studio, just the three of us.’ So he said, ‘Okay, Dice, I just want to try out some scenes.’ I say, ‘Bradley, I haven’t read the script yet, it’s a thick script.’ He says, ‘Let’s just try a fun scene. You are in the kitchen, drinking your morning coffee. Just fun things like father and daughter.’ And it was really good.”

Dice added that after he and Gaga went through another acting exercise that left both actors in tears, Cooper decided to cast him in the film. He told host DiStefano that he received the official offer two days later.

“He says, ‘I want to offer you the role of Lorenzo, Stephanie’s father.’ I couldn’t believe it,” Dice recalled of Cooper’s phone call. “He blew me away. Third billing.”

Besides Cooper, Gaga and Dice, A star is born Sam Elliot, Anthony Ramos, Dave Chappelle and Brandi Carlisle also performed. The film received eight Oscar nominations at the 2019 Academy Awards; the song “Shallow” won the award for best original song.
