Andrew Garfield Leans All the Way into 'Freaky' Horse Meme from We Live in Time with Custom Denim Jacket

Andrew Garfield fully accepted that he might just be a boy on a horse now.

The actor, 41, can’t escape the horse meme from his upcoming film We live in timeand he realized that his best course of action was to embrace all the oddities.

On October 2, he did just that wearing a custom Levi’s denim jacket with a small horse head patch on the front while in New York.

Andrew Garfield was terrified to shave Florence Pugh’s head on camera: ‘Thank God she has such a beautifully shaped melon’

The tailored jacket is just one of the many ways Garfield got involved with what could have been just a harmless merry-go-round horse in the film, which also stars Florence Pugh. In fact, Garfield originally didn’t think the horse — which gained its own meme-worthy fan base after finding a home on one of the film’s posters — would go so viral.

He said in the October 2 episode The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he had, in fact, noticed the horse on the poster, but thought it might be him only one notices it. He told host Stephen Colbert that he first saw it as he was just about to enter the shelter without his phone — and after he got his phone back, he quickly realized that everyone had noticed.

“I see this picture and I think, ‘Maybe I’m the only one who will notice this crazy horse. We seem to be on his poster in a way. I’m probably being overly sensitive and no one else will see it.’ And then I go to this sanctuary, turn off the phone,” he said. “Six days later, I open the phone, the first thing is Stephen Colbert talking about Crazy Horse.”

Garfield later told PEOPLE that the picture of him and Pugh with the horse was actually quite “nice,” though the horse may have taken a hit.

He admitted, however, that at the time they weren’t fully aware of the power that horses would have over the internet – they were only slightly aware that horses had a very unique appearance.

“I think maybe we were aware, ‘Oh my God, these horses are freaks,’” Garfield told PEOPLE. “But the image was the thing. They were so expressive. It was like we were attacking his poster.”
