Andrew Garfield Reveals He Uses His British Accent for 'the First Time' in We Live in Time

Andrew Garfield has been acting professionally on the screen for almost two decades, but it’s not often that he gets to act in his native accent.

In a recent TikTok video uploaded to the official account for Garfield’s new movie We live in timeboth he and his co-star Florence Pugh have admitted that they rarely perform in the natural English accent they usually speak off-camera.

“This is my second film where I’ve done my own voice, but it’s been a while,” Pugh, 28, said in the video, responding to a user who noted the natural voices of both stars in the film.

“In fact, a lot of people think that when I speak with my accent in interviews I’m lying and I’m dressing up,” Pugh continued. – And that’s the truth.

“And you? How about that?” she asked Garfield, 41, who took a moment to consider the question before agreeing.

“I think this is the first time, maybe, that I’ve used my — yeah, yeah, that’s true, I think that’s true, yeah, yeah, yeah,” he said.

Garfield has dual British and American citizenship. Born in Los Angeles to an American father and a British mother; he began living in Surrey, England at the age of three, as Esquire reported in a recent profile on the actor. Despite his English roots, Garfield’s most famous films — Social network, The Amazing Spider-Man and Hacksaw Ridge among them — seeing him perform with an American accent.

Pugh, a native of Oxford, England, has similarly found fame playing American characters in films such as 2019’s Little Women and Midsommar. IN We live in timeGarfield and Pugh portrays the couple Tobias and Almut who meet by chance when Almut accidentally hits Tobias with his car. From there, the romance begins, and the film follows their relationship over several years.

The two “are brought together in a sudden encounter that changes their lives,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Through the footage of their life together – falling in love with each other, building a home, becoming a family – a hard truth is revealed that shakes its foundations.”
