Andrew Walker Shares His Terrifying Face-Off with 'Feisty Bees' While Filming His Latest Hallmark Movie (Exclusive)

The latest Hallmark Channel movie, For love and honeythere’s a lot of buzz—literally—and some of it even landed on star Andrew Walker’s face!

In the film, which was shot in Malta, Walker plays an American archeology professor who follows a trail to a Mediterranean island, where he meets Eva, a local beekeeper played by Margaret Clunie. They soon discover that the location where the hive is hiding may contain clues to a local archaeological mystery.

“It’s unlike any Hallmark movie I’ve done,” says Walker, 44, who has starred in more than 25 movies for the network. “That’s the closest Indiana Jones meets the Hallmark movie. The whole journey is an adventure, fast, we are constantly on the road, it is a treasure hunt. Also, then you add landscapes and history.”

However, if you mess with bees, you might get stung (it is expression, right?) — and bees in Malta, according to Walker, “are known as lively bees. They transplant those bees to different countries, especially Canada, because they can withstand the cold. They’re very, very lively, very fiery little bees.”

He learned this the hard way on his first day on the set when he, his wife Cassandra, Clunie and some of the producers went to the apiary to meet the woman who was supposed to be the beekeeper on set and see the hives.

“We’re all wearing bee suits and they’re showing us honey, bees and everything, and I decided to take my phone out of the suit and film this,” Walker recalls. “I step back and turn my back, open the zipper on the suit and sure enough, a bee flies into my suit.

“I’m not too worried—I’ve been stung in the past—but I was like okay, it’s just one bee, I’m going to try to blow it out. So I opened the suit a little more and started blowing to try to get the bee out and two more bees flew into my suit in at this moment.”

It gets worse: “Now they’re flying around my head,” he continues. “They get into my hoodie and at that point I say to the beekeeper like, ‘Hey, I’ve got three bees in my suit.’ We go down to the car where there are no bees and I take off my suit, and one bee is stuck in my hood and is stinging my chin.”

Luckily, Walker has a beard for the film, so fans won’t see the edge (or the makeup trying to hide it).

“From what I hear, people are paying big bucks for these things these days,” jokes Walker, who started a skin care company called SkinMason. – I really got my money that day.

PEOPLE: How was the filming in Malta? Have you ever been there before?

ANDREW WALKER: Never. I heard about it through Lacey Chabert, but it wasn’t on my radar at all. She and Will Kemp were shooting their movie there, The dancing detective. I said, “One day, maybe I’ll go there.” But now that I was, I couldn’t imagine not visiting. It is an absolute gem of a place. That’s where they shot all the King’s Landing stuff Game of Thrones, so castles and cliff edges overlooking the Mediterranean. This movie takes you around Malta. We shot in almost every corner of that island.

You did Safari romance last year — you’ve been pretty lucky with location movies lately.

I was very, very lucky. I feel like I invested my time. I did six films in Winnipeg before they gave me away Safari!

This is Margaret Clunie’s first Hallmark movie. In addition to being British and appearing in several episodes of the Star Wars series AndorraWhat do fans need to know about her?

She is amazing. We hope you’ll be seeing a lot more of her in these Hallmark movies. I love the array of amazing women who work for Hallmark, but it was so nice to see a new name coming through. These British actors are all classically trained. She is so adaptable and stunning, and she was ready to play. We passed through various weather conditions. We had a lot of wind, her hair was everywhere, we had hot days, we had cold, cold mornings. She’s such a talented actress and I’m really happy we were able to get her for this.

Tell me about SkinMason. How did that happen?

The curse at the end of my day is washing my face, getting soap and water or some kind of cleanser, peeing my face and then doing some routine. That’s too many steps. My wife always yells at me for using too many of her $200 serums, so I thought, “This is great because I’m a consumer.” [My partner and friend, Dr. Hussein Kanji, and I] It took a year and a half and we met with different formulators, and we came across this serum and mild acid scrub pad formula. These pads have a special peptide… Both formulas are patented, and the peptide actually eliminates acne-causing bacteria.

Can you share something about your next Curious restaurateur movie with Nikki DeLoach?

I haven’t read the script yet. I know we’re filming another curious restaurateur. I know we’re potentially shooting a few more because [viewership] numbers on the latter. Every one, for that matter. It was such a dream—and Nikki manifested it all. It’s been a wild ride and I feel so privileged and grateful to be doing this with her, without a doubt one of the best, kindest human beings I know.
