Ayo Edebiri Reveals Childhood Crush on Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy Got Her ‘Grounded’

Monday night was eventful for Ayo Edebiri — and not just because she won her first Emmy. Bear star also met her childhood crush Matthew Macfadyen!

After the ceremony, the 28-year-old actress told her fellow Emmy winner that she once “got punished” for having his face on her computer screensaver. Or rather, she said in the sweet moment he captured Party tonight that her father still saw Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy in 2005 Pride and Prejudiceei “it was like, ‘Who is this man?'”

Macfadyen, 49, chimed in, imagining Edebiri’s father’s response: “Who is this guy in the coat?” Edebiri described his Mr Darcy as someone with “nice hair”.

Macfadyen was amused – as well as impressed – by the anecdote. “She was punished for having a screensaver of me as Mr Darcy on her laptop,” he said ET. “Good parenting. That’s good parenting. I haven’t heard that, but that’s good.”

As it happens, Edebiri’s family were in the audience at the Peacock Theater on Monday as she was named Best Supporting Actress of 2023 in a comedy series win for Bear. During her speech, she thanked both her “found family” on the show — including co-stars and fellow Emmy winners Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach — as well as her “real family.”

“I make them sit kind of far away from me because I’m a bad kid,” she joked. “But I love you so much. Thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and black and proud of it all. I just love you so much.”

Edebiri added, “It’s probably not a dream to move to this country and have your child be like, ‘I want to improve.’ But you are the real one.”
