Career
In 1994, he dropped out of sports science and moved to Asia to become a Buddhist monk. He traveled to India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Australia and Russia to practice meditation, culminating in full ordination in a Tibetan monastery in the Indian Himalayas. Puddicombe returned to Russia after completing a one-year meditation program in Scotland, where he spent four years studying meditation in Moscow. After four years, he left the religious service. In 2004, he returned to the United Kingdom to study circus arts in London. At the same time, he started his own private meditation practice in the city. Through his private practice, Andy has tried to make meditation and mindfulness accessible, meaningful and useful to as many people as possible.
Puddicombe established a private meditation practice in 2006 and worked as a mindfulness teacher for the next four years. He also adopted the terminology and procedures he had previously learned. It was during this time that he met Rich Pierson, his future business partner and co-founder of Headspace. Puddicombe gave a TED talk titled ‘All It Takes is 10 Minutes of Mindfulness’, in which he discussed the benefits of practicing mindfulness daily. To date, it has had 7 million views and was one of the first TED talks to be shown on Netflix.
Andy has written three novels. The books are currently available in ten languages and in 25 countries. Poddicombe has appeared in Vogue, the New York Times, the Financial Times, Entrepreneur, Men’s Wellness, and Esquire, among other publications.
