Angela Samota is remembered by her friends and family as a lovely and honest young woman. It is sad that an innocent person like her died in such a horrible way. Here are five basic facts about Samota’s murder before the episode of Killed in the Morning airs.
1) Samota’s lover was suspected of her murder.
Ben McCall, Angela’s lover, was one of the leading suspects in her murder. According to reports, he was the last person she spoke to before she fell silent. Ben contacted the police after discovering her brutally murdered in her off-campus home. Her chest received 18 stab wounds. However, during Angela’s autopsy, medical authorities determined that her attacker was not a secret agent. This eliminated Ben from the list of suspects.
2) Angela Samot’s murder inspired her best friend to become a private investigator.
Sheila Wysocki was Angela’s closest friend from college, and it was she who prompted officials to re-examine the case 20 years later. She conducted research and wrote documentation detailing all rape cases and those who were convicted at the time. Unfortunately, the cops refused to listen. So she decided to become her own private investigator. She gained knowledge of Tennessee law as well as cyberbullying and copyright laws. She even took the exam to become a private detective. However, despite her investigative license, the police refused to cooperate with her on Angela’s murder, which at the time had become a cold case.
3) In 2008, Sheila got the police to reopen Angela’s case.
The Dallas Homicide Squad revived the Angela Samota investigation and assigned an investigator who was eager to work with Sheila in response to Sheila’s persistent prodding. DNA evidence from Angela’s crime scene was only discovered then. Sheila had been informed earlier that the evidence had been lost in the flood, so the new information stunned her. DNA evidence found a match that could lead to the identity of Angela’s killer.
4) The DNA match was with a serial sex offender.
The match was discovered when Angela’s case was reopened and DNA evidence was compared to existing criminal records. DNA data of Donald Andrew Bess Jr. match the details of the killer. Donald was on parole while serving a 25-year sentence for sexual assault and kidnapping at the time of Angela’s murder. In 2008, when the match was discovered, Donald Bess was serving a life sentence for an unrelated assault conviction.
Angela Samota was murdered in 1984. No one was convicted of her murder until 2010. This conviction would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of her best friend. 5) Angela’s killer, Donald Bess, is sentenced to death.
It was revealed that Bess was a serial robber who had served many prison terms for attacking multiple women. During the trial for Angela’s murder, other women, including his ex-wife, testified against him. The jury found him guilty based on the overwhelming evidence against him and sentenced him to death. Bess filed a series of appeals based on his ill health, drunkenness and tragic past, but all were rejected. He remains on death row at Galveston Hospital in Texas. The execution date has not been determined.
