Anil Anna Gote is an Indian journalist, politician and businessman who served three times as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He rose to fame after being accused of involvement in a stamp paper scam perpetrated by Abdul Karim Telgi.

Anil Anna Gote aka Anil Umrao Gote was born in Dhule, Maharashtra, India. According to one source, he was born on Saturday, May 24, 1947 (age 76; as of 2023), and according to another source, he was born on Monday, May 24, 1948 (age 75; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Gemini. He studied till class 11 at Maharashtra Vidyalaya & Junior College in Pune until 1964. Before 1966, he pursued diploma in Civil Engineering (DCE) from Government Technical College, Kolhapur. Later, he pursued a career in journalism.

Anil Gote is closely associated with the Kolhapur-based farmers’ union Shetkari Sanghatana Movement. Later, he became a member of the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) (SJP(R)), also known as the Janata Dal (Socialist), and first became a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Dhule Municipal constituency in 1999 , the number of votes cast was 2,37,423 votes cast. In 2004, he fielded his wife Hema Anil Gote from Dhul in the legislative elections; however, she lost. In November 2008, he formed his own political party called Loksangram (LKSGM). In 2009, he contested the legislative elections from the LKSGM seat and became the MLA of Dhule city again with 2,69,624 votes.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the 2014 legislative elections and became a BJP MP for the third time with 2,86,197 votes. He quit the BJP before the 2019 legislative elections and contested the elections from the LKSGM seat; however, he lost the election; he used the whistle symbol during the 2019 legislative elections. On December 12, 2019, he joined the Kuomintang Congress Party.

Telgi stamp paper scam

In 2003, Anil Gote’s name emerged in a stamp paper counterfeiting scam run by Abdul Karim Telgi across various states in India. Gote was arrested on June 30, 2003 and charged under MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act). It was later revealed that Gothe used his political clout to help Telji obtain a stamp vendor license from the Maharashtra government. He is lodged in Pune Yewada Central Jail. Investigations revealed that Gote had a close relationship with Telgi since the early 1990s when Gote made Telgi a trustee of its public trust fund called the Kisan Trust.

Goth allegedly flew to New Delhi on the same flight as Telji and stayed at a day hotel for a few days. Gote is also reported to be a regular visitor to Telgi’s Mumbai office. After spending four years in jail, Gote was granted bail on June 30, 2007, by Special Judge Chitra Bhedi of MCOCA Special Court on a bond of Rs 5 lakh each. Gott produced his health report claiming to be in poor health, which was the basis for bail. He was never convicted in the case.

Accuses the BJP of corruption

Ghote has accused several Maharashtra BJP leaders of corruption on different occasions. In August 2017, he accused multiple bureaucrats and politicians of buying land in areas where the government announced projects in order to later sell the land to the government to make huge profits. He also said that he would submit the list of such persons to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). In March 2023, Gote accused Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of receiving Rs 10 crore from RKW Developers Ltd and other real estate developers For Rs 10 crore, the developers were allegedly linked to Iqbal Memon, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts and a confidant of Dawood Ibrahim.
