In 1983, he pursued his Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut, Kozhikode, Kerala. In 1985, he received his Master of Technology in Structural Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, West Bengal. Anil Sharma reportedly moved to Delhi from Bihar in 2002 to try his hand at the real estate market. In 2003, he founded “Amarpali Group”, a real estate and construction company in India. In 2003, he completed his first project in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Over time, the company expanded into various sectors including education (Amrapali Institute of Technology, Lakki Sarai and Amrapali Institute of Hotel Management, Noida) and food processing (marketed under the brand name Mum’s product brand).

According to reports, in 2023, Anil Sharma, managing director of Amrapali Group, was one of the six persons accused in the murder case of a former secretary of a prominent educational institution in Bihar. In August 2014, Dr Sharad Chandra, secretary of Balika Vidyapeeth in Lakhisarai, was shot dead while reading a newspaper on the balcony of his home in the college campus. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the motive for the crime was to seize the assets and land of the educational institution.
