Animal Rescues Celebrate Taylor Swift’s Birthday With $13 Donation Challenge

What better way to celebrate Taylor Swift’s birthday than by giving back to a cause close to the cat lover’s heart?

Several animal shelters have launched a Taylor Swift challenge to raise money for animal rescues to celebrate the musician’s 34th birthday, which falls on December 13. For the challenge, animal-loving Swifties are encouraged to donate $13 to a local rescue or shelter.

The donation amount is a nod to one of Swift’s favorite numbers. And it’s no secret that the singer-songwriter is a fan of animals. She is the pet parent of three cats, including Benjamin Button, who she adopted from her “ME!” music video uploaded in 2019 and brought to her Time Photography for the person of the year 2023.

The Pennsylvania SPCA said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that it launched the #TaylorSwiftChallenge after “a challenging year, with adoptions slowing dramatically and owners flooding into shelters at an unprecedented rate.”

“They need support, and there’s no better time than now,” added the pet rescue statement.

The Pennsylvania SPCA is promoting the #TaylorSwiftChallenge on its website with a banner that mimics images of Swift’s Eras Tour with different pictures of cats in colored squares.

The organization also teased some Swift songs in its message about the challenge on Facebook: “In short, if you’re here, we hope you chose us! Will you donate now to be the first for animals in need? We have I’m thrilled to see it develop with participation rescues and shelters from North Carolina to Texas, Missouri to Massachusetts and Kansas City to Oklahoma. We’re not alone, little one.”

Animal Rescue of Boston also announced on social media that they will be participating in the #TaylorSwiftChallenge, asking people to donate $13 to the organization in the singer’s name. Along with the post, they shared adorable photos of adoptable animals styled on Swift’s album covers, including a white cat named Bella on Midnight covers and a dog named Zoey on Lover album cover.

Outside of the Taylor Swift Challenge, Felix Cat Insurance and Brooklyn Cat Cafe have teamed up to recognize 13 adoptable cafe cats as “Year of the Cat” finalists in honor of Swift’s 34th birthday and her Time Person of the Year cover. The 13 finalist cats, named after Swift songs, are now available for adoption at the Brooklyn Cat Cafe.

Felix Cat Insurance also announced that it will make a $34,000 donation on behalf of Swift’s cat, Benjamin Button, to the Brooklyn Cat Cafe to help adopt cats.

“Since celebrity cats have their time in the spotlight, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to connect with cat lovers and share that light with other cats in need,” said Jamie Maxfield, director of marketing and brand specialist at Felix Cat Insurance.

This isn’t the first time animal rescuers have used Taylor Swift and the number 13 for promotion. In April, the Houston Humane Society lowered its cat adoption fee to $13 to celebrate Swift’s Eras Tour stop in the Texas city.
