Anita Nair is an Indian novelist who was born on January 26, 1966 in Shoranur, Palakkad District, Kerala. She graduated in English Literature from NSS College, Ottapalam. Nair was working with an advertising agency when he wrote the book “Subway Hustlers.” The product was sold to Har-Anand Publishing House. It was this book that earned her a scholarship to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has also written a crime novel series, which has won several awards, and her works have been translated into more than 31 languages. Anita is a progressive writer with a feminist perspective on things, which is reflected in much of her work.

Nair is a Hindu and although she is secular, she brings stories from the Quran to children and believes in teaching children not to be afraid of Islam.
Profession
Nair was widely loved and appreciated. Her famous novels include A Better Man (2000) and The Mistress (2003). Her other works, such as “The Adventures of Nonu” and “Skating Squirrel” (2007) for young readers, were equally well-received and popular. The author’s second book, Ladies Coupe (2001), became the first book printed by Picador USA and has been translated into many languages around the world. Nair’s novel Mistress (2003) was a finalist for the 2007 PEN/Beyond Margins Award in the United States and a finalist for the 2007 LiBeratuepreis Award in Germany. The book was also longlisted for the UK Orange Prize. She is often called a feminist writer, to which Nair said:
When I wrote Ladies Coupe, it was called a feminist novel. This bothers me because of what we are talking about here. Feminism has never won applause. It was like a derogatory jab. I’m confused. So, to me, feminism is something – as every woman’s right to be a woman and not feel inferior because of it. Most of the time, women feel like you have to be a certain way to be a good woman.
We must first clarify who we are. What does our gender require of us? Biologically speaking, there is a difference. Unfortunately, we don’t acknowledge this. It’s not just the male gaze, it’s the way men understand women. Feminism is about women being comfortable with women.
Nair has always depicted the best of women in her work. But she doesn’t like this categorization. She also has a National Film Award-winning screenplay. Nair’s work is influenced by vernacular spaces, as she says she finds it interesting and interesting to see what happens in vernacular literary spaces, and most of her characters come from rural backgrounds.
Anita’s Talent Discovery events are designed for passionate and aspiring writers who are looking for guidance and direction. Anita mentored 12 eager learners, and her literary workshops took them through various literary forms and more, aiming to help them discover their weaknesses and hone their skills under the guidance of Nair herself. The course costs INR 70,000 and learners get weekly insights from guest writers and a full one-on-one session from Nair himself at the end of the day.
Thoughts on censorship
She believes any form of censorship is unwarranted and means the majority kneels to a more powerful minority. She also feels it takes away the originality and essence of one’s work. She further said that if anyone feels offended, they can choose to ignore the book and not read it. She said it was basic human nature that despite the book being withdrawn it would still be downloaded and read. Overall, she seems to reject censorship culture.
