In 2020, Anju became friends with Nasrallah, a native of Kursho village in Upper Dir District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, on the social networking site Facebook. Nasrallah’s father’s name is Gulimullah Khan, the youngest of five brothers. He is a science graduate from Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Sheringal. They later became very close friends. In July 2023, after crossing the border to Pakistan, Anju said that she had very deep feelings for Nasrallah, who was six years younger than her.

A journey to meet Nasrallah of Pakistan
She applied for a visa to Pakistan in May 2023 and was approved on May 4, 2023. She was allowed to travel within 90 days and allowed to stay for 30 days.

On July 20, 2023, she left her home and traveled from Alwar to Delhi, from which she took a bus to the Attari-Wagah border and then crossed to Pakistan and traveled to Lahore on July 22, 2023. Nasrallah received her in Rawalpindi. Her brother David said in an interview that Anju initially told her family that she was going to Jaipur to meet her sister; however, she instead went to Amritsar and informed her family about the same after arriving there . She then traveled to Lahore and informed her family that she would be returning in a few days. Before going to Pakistan, she also took a leisure trip to Goa, where her sister lives.

When news of her trip to Pakistan broke, people began to speculate that she was there to marry her friend Nasrallah. But she denied the news and said she just came to meet him and see the beauty of Pakistan. Nasrallah also said there was no romantic relationship between them and that she lived safely in a separate women’s room in his home. Pakistani police officials also checked her visa application and confirmed that her trip was legal and valid and that she would return to India on August 20, 2023.

On July 25, 2023, some media reports went viral claiming that she had accepted Islam and changed her name to Fatima. Reports also claimed that she had married Nasrallah in a nikah ceremony and received gold worth 2.2 million rupees.

On the contrary, some media reports appeared on the evening of July 25, 2023, saying that she had not converted to Islam, and the news that she converted to Islam and got married was completely false. Anju also posted a video in which she said she was very happy in Pakistan and asked the Indian media and people not to harass her children and family.
When the news reached her family, her father said Anju should not come back but should die in Pakistan. He also claimed that he had no relationship with Anju for 20 years. A video was circulated on social media in which Anju and Nasrallah visited the Rawali Tunnel connecting Upper Dir and Chitral districts.

On July 28, 2023, a video emerged showing her wearing a burqa while having dinner with Nasrallah and his friends. In an interview with an Indian reporter on July 28, 2023, Nasrallah stated that he was married to Anju and would not leave her.

He also claimed that Anju had been separated from her husband for three years and had filed for divorce from him before coming to Pakistan. Nasrallah said Anju would return to Pakistan and then travel to Pakistan with his children. Nasrallah said that if Anju did not return to Pakistan, he would come to India to bring her back. Her husband denied the claims and said he was still married to Anju. He also claimed that their children did not want Anju back or living with her.

- Multiple news reports in India stated that the Pakistani government had announced that Anju would be given a government job and a house to live in if she lived with Nasrallah in Pakistan.
- Anju’s husband claimed in an interview that Anju was a pathological liar and often argued with him over trivial matters; however, he never expected that she would take such drastic action.
- While the Indian public shamed her for leaving her family behind, the Pakistani public said she took the step because India was unsafe for women. Many songs were also released that humiliated Anju and told her love story with Nasrallah. Many of the songs also compared her to Seema Haider, who crossed the border to India to live with her boyfriend Sachin Meena.

- Many news reports claim that Anju has been surrounded by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and will be killed in Pakistan.
