Anthony Hopkins Becomes the Mascot for Ryan Reynolds’s Wrexham AFC in STōK’s Super Bowl Commercial

STōK’s Super Bowl ad isn’t about football like you might expect.

At American football’s biggest night, Sir Anthony Hopkins will be celebrating Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football (ahem, soccer) team owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Hopkins transforms into Wrexham’s mascot, Wrex the dragon, for the big game video (above) created by Reynolds’ production company Maximum Effort.

“To act is to cheat,” says Hopkins. “But to become this beast well, it takes a bit more rhythm.”

“Now, hear me roar,” the 86-year-old actor continues in the ad before placing his head on the dragon.

Once in full costume, he was seen interacting with fans on the field. Hopkins’ voice booms, “This is what they came to see. They love me! Roar!”

In the final scene, Hopkins admits, “Ironically, a cold drink gives birth to a fire-breathing dragon.” He sips a large glass of STōK cold brew in the dressing room before an off-screen voice warns him that the second half of the match is about to begin.

“People are used to seeing coffee ads during the Big Game, but I don’t think they expect it to be cold brew, let alone a cold brew brand celebrating the Welsh football team,” STōK’s Brittney Polka said in a statement.

Danone North America’s Vice President of Beverages continued, “STōK is not afraid to make bold moves and challenge the norms of traditional marketing. Partnership with Sir Anthony Hopkins to bring Wrexham AFC [American] football’s biggest stage is exactly the kind of bold act fans have come to expect from STōK.”

As for the football team, it became famous worldwide when Reynolds, 47, bought it in 2021 along with fellow actor McElhenney, who starred in 16 seasons of the FX series It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. STōK is the official stadium sponsor of Wrexham AFC.

The team is the subject of the FX 2022 documentary Welcome to Wrexham.

STōK’s commercial will air during the Super Bowl when the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers face off. Super Bowl LVIII is on CBS on February 11th at 6:30pm ET.
