Anthony Hopkins’ latest film is about a heroic true story.
On Thursday, FilmNation Entertainment and Warner Bros. released the trailer for Hopkins’ new film One lifewhich stars the two-time Oscar winner, 85, as British Sir Nicholas Winton, the man credited with organizing the rescue operation that brought approximately 669 children from then-Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to England in the months leading up to World War II in 1939.
The trailer for the film opens with Winton sitting in a live audience television show as the host begins to tell his story. As the older man reflects on his past, the younger version of Winton, played by Johnny Flynn (A suit), is shown working to organize a rescue.

Both versions of Winton seem haunted by the belief that they could have done more to help, even as those around him marvel at his story. Winton kept his involvement in the rescue a secret until his wife discovered documents related to the operation in 1988, according to the Holocaust Encyclopedia.
Parts of the trailer directly recreate Winton’s memorable 1988 appearance on the BBC show That is life, in which he was surprised by a number of people in the audience whom he helped save decades earlier. One video of part of his appearance on YouTube has been viewed more than 41 million times.

“Nicky considered himself a banker, not a humanitarian. Yet when he visited the recently annexed Prague in 1938 and saw the plight of Jewish refugees on the run, he did what he believed to be the right thing – the thing anyone would do – and dedicated himself to the cause “, reads the synopsis of the film on the website of FilmNation Entertainment.

“Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky is haunted by the fate of the children he couldn’t help,” adds the synopsis. “And so it is only when he is surprised by survivors on live television that he can accept that, when faced with devastating crimes, saving even one life is a victory, and the British public learns the truth about the hero hidden in their midst.”

In real life, Winton made significant efforts to bring children from modern-day Czechia and Slovakia as World War II approached while working on the London Stock Exchange in 1939. Although he is credited with helping save as many as 669 children, mostly Jewish, researchers believe there are more refugees who have never been identified, according to the Holocaust Encyclopedia.
Winton, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, died in 2015 at the age of 106.
One life has its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday. The film is due for release in the UK on January 1, 2024 — it doesn’t appear to have a US release date yet.
