Anthony Joshua suspended from boxing after brutal KO defeat to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium

ANTHONY JOSHUA has been suspended from boxing for 28 days following his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois.

The two-time world heavyweight champion, 34, was destroyed by his British rival in front of a record crowd at Wembley last weekend.

AJ was knocked out three times before hitting the canvas one last time with a fifth round decisive punch.

He has now been handed a standard 28-day ban by the British Boxing Board of Control.

This is always given to British fighters when they suffer a break loss.

But the suspension will not affect Joshua as he does not plan to fight before the suspension expires on October 19.

He is expected to return in 2025 after the fourth professional loss of his career.

And Saudi boxing boss Turki Alalshikh has revealed that he plans to make a rematch between Joshua and Dubois.

The Olympic gold medalist’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed earlier this week the three opponents Joshua could face next.

It comes after AJ insisted on social media that he will not retire.

His options will largely depend on the outcome of Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch against Tyson Fury on December 21.

Speaking to iFL TV, Hearn said: “If Fury lost maybe they would [AJ and Fury] both of them say ‘Okay, let’s give the public one more hooray, two big fights, done’.

Antony Joshua has ‘regressed’ and ‘doesn’t have the right team around him’, says British boxing legend

“Or, if Fury wins, he could defend against AJ for the unified world heavyweight title, and AJ could beat him to become a three-time heavyweight champion. Anything is possible.

“Or we could retaliate against Daniel Dubois.

“Or [he] could fight someone else. Deontay Wilder. I don’t know, it’s not something that’s been discussed yet, but two guys coming off a loss, big hitters, somebody has to walk away from the sport.

“But for me the options are a Daniel Dubois rematch or wait and see what happens in Fury vs. Usyk.”

“Aren’t you having fun?” I’m a gladiator’ – what Dubois and Joshua said after the brutal fight

DANIEL DUBOIS destroyed Anthony Joshua’s dream of becoming a three-time world heavyweight champion, writes Wally Downes Jr.

Joshua fell FOUR times as Dubois finished with a stunning fifth-round knockout in front of a Wembley record 96,000 and millions of TV viewers to retain his IBF belt.

AJ, 34, never recovered after being knocked down in the first round of last night’s Battle of Britain showdown when he was caught on the chin by Dubois’ massive right hook.

Here’s what they said after the fight:

DANIEL DUBOIS

“Aren’t you having fun? I am a gladiator, a warrior to the end. This is the biggest victory in my career. I couldn’t miss this opportunity and now I want to move to the highest level of this game.

“I was on a roller coaster ride and this is my time. I will not stop until I reach my full potential.”

ANTHONY JOSHUA

“As distraught as I am, it is what it is.

“I had a tough, fast opponent and there were a lot of mistakes on my part. Kudos to my opponent and his team.

“We rolled the dice and came up short. You know I’m fired up, but I’m going to stay composed and respect my opponent.”

FRANK WARREN (DUBOIS PROMOTER)

“It was a phenomenal fight, like Hagler vs. Hearns.

“Brilliant fight and everyone saw the champion’s performance tonight.

“Daniel showed his courage, his skills.

“AJ caught him with a kick towards the end and I was worried, but what an amazing, fantastic fight.”

EDDIE HEARN (AJ’S PROMOTER)

“AJ landed a huge right in the first round and fought his heart out.

“He hurt Daniel at the end of the fourth and then again in the fifth, but he got greedy and went for the right hand and that’s all she wrote.

“I’m sure Anthony will use the rematch clause.”
