Anton Lazzaro News
On Friday, a federal jury found Anton “Tony” Lazzaro, a former fundraiser and political operative for the Minnesota Republican Party, guilty on all counts of trafficking five women ages 15 to 16. After a featured trial by the 32-year-old Lazzaro in his defense, the jury began deliberating Friday afternoon. Lazzaro maintained that he did not pay for sex or to recruit young partners, even after he later admitted that he had affairs with all the girls. After only about two hours of deliberation, the jury of six men and six women returned with a guilty verdict.
The mandatory minimum sentence for Lazzaro is 10 years. The United States Attorney for Minnesota, Andrew Luger, later said that prosecutors would seek a “harsh sentence,” but did not provide further details. Authorities say Lazzaro met his co-defendant Gisela Castro Medina on the SeekingArrangement dating website, which mainly matches wealthy men with younger partners. They claim that she then paid him to find her additional sexual partners, including five alleged victims who testified against her. Lazzaro claimed the website was no different from other dating sites and denied having a contract with Castro Medina, then 18, to find women for him.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Melinda Williams, Lazzaro had “all the trappings of luxury” but wanted more and devised a scheme to procure sex for underage girls. She called Lazzaro a “predatory” and reminded jurors that sexual consent is not a valid defense to human trafficking charges under federal law. Daniel Gerdts, a defense attorney, argued that most victims of human trafficking do not gain monetary gain. He added that Lazzaro had no control over the accused victims typical of human trafficking cases and gave money and gifts to people he never had sex with.
But Judge Patrick Schiltz made it clear in his instructions to the jury that Lazzaro should not have had power over the accused victims to force them to engage in sex trafficking. Lazzaro admitted during the trial that he had sexual relations with a 16-year-old girl that Castro Medina brought to his apartment in the city. She was a young man whom the prosecution called Victim A in court documents. The woman, now 19, testified against Lazzaro on Monday. Lazzaro claimed that even though he gave her money to buy a phone, he became increasingly concerned that she would support her drug use. He denied paying the teen for sexual services.
