Anubrata Mondal is an Indian politician and businessman. He hit the headlines in August 2022 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him in a multi-crore cattle smuggling case. He is also known to be one of the closest aides of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Anubrata Mondal used to run a small grocery store to make ends meet. Later he also worked as a fish merchant. His political career began in the early 1990s when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC).
He met Mamata Banerjee in the 1990s when she was the president of the Bengal Youth Congress. He left the INC in 1998 amid growing differences between Mamata Banerjee and the INC’s senior leaders. In the same year, Anubrata joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC). In 2000, he was appointed TMC Birbhum district president. According to Anubrata, he never contested elections because he did not want to become a minister. He said in an interview,
I never contested a general or parliamentary election because I never aspired to become a minister. I don’t want it. As a loyal party member, I am happy to work for the party. “
As a senior leader of the TMC, he successfully organized several state elections in which the TMC achieved landslide victories. After the TMC formed the government in West Bengal in 2011, his power grew manifold. Anubharat Mondal also served as Chairman of West Bengal State Rural Development Authority (WBSRDA) and Chairman of Tarapith Development Authority. In February 2022, he was selected into the TMC National Working Committee.

In 1990, Anubrata Mondal founded Mayurakshi Cotton Mills in Birbhum, West Bengal. He was appointed director of the plant on April 9, 2013. He also had more than 16 rice mills registered in his name in West Bengal, according to CBI data. He also owns 2500 shares of ANM Agrochem Foods.

Condoning violence during elections
Anubrata Mondal has often courted controversy for committing violence in West Bengal, especially during elections. In 2013, Mondal made headlines for publicly threatening non-TMC candidates during the panchayat campaign in Birbhum district. At a rally, he asked TMC workers to burn down the houses of opposition candidates and attack police forces deployed on election duty with crude bombs. Congress and BJP candidates also accused him of asking his supporters to attack candidates seeking to fill poll nominations. Talking about the incident, the then Birbhum district PPP president Dudhkumar Mondal said,
Sujay Biswas and Biswajit Baidya of the BJP were dragged out of the BDO office and beaten up. They suffered severe head injuries. In Rapppur, Kashinath Mishra of our district was beaten up and he was hospitalized with head injuries. “
His comments and actions were criticized by the opposition, which complained to the state electoral commission. Mamata later defended him and accused the media of trying to create TRP by distorting his statement and ignoring his hypoxic health condition. In 2014, he was accused of supporting the murder of Sagar Ghosh, the father of Hriday Ghosh, an independent candidate from Birbhum, Hri Di Ghosh had contested in the 2013 panchayat elections. According to reports, Anuprata made provocative speeches during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and the 2016 Bengal Assembly elections, and was subsequently placed on the watch list of the Election Commission of India (ECI). In the 2018 panchayat polls, several non-TMC candidates accused Mondal of instructing his supporters to prevent other candidates from filing nominations. During the 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed a case against Anubrata after TMC workers beat up BJP worker Bapi Ankure to death. The BJP said in its complaint that Babi was murdered by TMC workers on the orders of Anubrata as he wanted to create an “atmosphere of fear” in Bengal. A video has gone viral on the internet in which Anubrata threatens a senior police officer that he will face dire consequences if he is restrained.

Anubrata Mondal’s name is also associated with the Bogtuyi massacre in March 2022, when eight people were burned alive in a fight.
Money laundering and livestock smuggling charges
In 2020, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an FIR against Anubrata Mondal, his bodyguard Saigal Hossain, Enamul Haque and BSF commander Satish Kumar. The CBI alleged in the FIR that Anubrata was involved in cross-border cattle smuggling between 2015 and 2017 and earned crores of rupees through the activity. On August 12, 2022, Anubrata was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after she failed to appear before the Kolkata investigation team even after being summoned ten times. A CBI official said in an interview,
We arrested him for not cooperating with the investigation into the cattle smuggling case. Mondal was found to be directly involved in the scam. We will question him today and take necessary action in accordance with the law. “
He was later produced before a court in Asansol, which sent him to CBI custody, after which he was taken to the Correctional Center in Asansol. In November 2022, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed another chargesheet against Anubrata Mondal, accusing him of laundering money by smuggling cattle to Bangladesh through lottery. Mondal sought to regularize proceeds from livestock smuggling by showing he had won a lottery of Rs. 1 Crore from a lottery company in Nagaland in December 2021. However, the CBI claimed that in 2019, two years before 2021, Rs 10 lakh was deposited in Mondal’s account and Rs 51 lakh was deposited in two installments in the account of his daughter Sukanya. Mondal tried to regularize income from livestock smuggling through some lottery prizes. The investigation continues to find out if and how he and his daughter won the lottery multiple times. “
In November 2022, a Bolpur lottery businessman named Bapi Ganguly claimed that Anubrata Mondal did not win the Rs 1 crore lottery ticket; The real winner was a young man named Sheikh Noor Ali. During the interrogation of Sheikh Noor Ali’s father, it was discovered that Mondal purchased lottery tickets from Ali and promised to pay him Rs 8.3 million. Ali’s father said that initially Rs 5-7 lakh was deposited into his bank account, however, when he demanded the remaining amount, he started receiving death threats. This rare lottery ticket was actually sold by Rahul Lottery Agency in Bolpur. Kalam Sheikh, a retailer, sold it to Noor Ali, a resident of a village near Bolpur. Anubrata Mondal bought the lottery ticket (from Noor) for Rs 83 lakh. Noor Ali is telling the truth. He didn’t lie to anyone. The sale of lottery tickets was mediated by Biswajyoti Banerjee (Trinamul MP from Bolpur) and I personally checked whether the tickets were genuine as they had no experience in lottery business at all. “
In November 2022, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Anubrata Mondal in connection with the cross-border cattle smuggling case.
Following the Supreme Court order, he was released on bail on July 30, 2024.
