Gaurav Gogoi is an Indian politician and social worker, the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He was twice elected to the Assembly from Kaliabor constituency in Assam. In 2023, he made headlines after leading a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi-led government.

After completing his engineering degree, Gaurav joined Airtel’s marketing team to pursue his dream of becoming the CEO. Gaurav joined the Indian National Congress in 2013 and was selected as the party’s candidate in the Kalibor constituency of Assam in the 2014 general elections. He was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha by defeating Mrinal Kumar Saikia of the Bharatiya Janata Party by 93,874 votes. During his tenure from 2014 to 2019, he was a member of several committees, including the Standing Committee on Defence, Railways and the Committee on Violation of Protocol and Contempt by Government Officials by Members of the Lok Sabha.
In 2019, Gaurav was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Kalibor constituency, which has been controlled by the Gogoi family since 1998. In 2020, he was appointed deputy leader of the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha.
Gaurav led the no-confidence motion against the ruling party government on July 26, 2023, citing ethnic violence in Manipur. He was later appointed as Chairman of the Screening Committee on August 3, 2023, responsible for selecting candidates for the Rajasthan Assembly elections. Other members of the committee include Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot and CP Joshi, among others.

defamation lawsuit threat
In September 2023, Gagan Gogoi faced the threat of defamation suit from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. In the same year, Gogoi accused Biswa’s wife of illegally receiving a subsidy of Rs. Assam Prime Minister Kisan Sampada Yojana and her husband Himanta Biswa are involved with an investment of Rs 10 crore. Gogoi said in an interview that the subsidy was obtained for her company Pride East Entertainment Private Limited. He further called on Himanta Biswa to resign as Assam chief minister for his involvement in the matter. Gaurav Gogoi said,
It does not matter how much money is credited to the accounts of the Chief Minister’s family. Government subsidies should be given to local entrepreneurs and farmers who really need support. “
Himanta Biswa and his wife, on the other hand, later refuted the claims and threatened to file a defamation suit against Gogoi. Talking about the issue in an interview, Himanta said he would resign if any evidence against him and his wife was found. However, Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma said she would file a defamation lawsuit against Gogoi to protect the reputation of the company and its hardworking employees. Liniki Buyan said,
Therefore, I was forced to file a defamation suit against Gaurav Gogoi in court, seeking damages of Rs 10 crore to defend the reputation of our hard-working employees from his defamation campaign. “
