AP Singh aka Ajay Prakash Singh aka Dr AP Singh was born on Saturday, July 1, 1972 (51 years old; as of 2023) in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India. His star sign is Cancer. AP Singh started his career in 1997 as a trainee advocate in the Supreme Court in the case of Tantrik Chandraswami, accused of fraud, money laundering and extortion. He was duly admitted as an advocate with the Lucknow Bar Council in 1998. Throughout his career, he has handled many high-profile cases and has been in the spotlight for his role as defence counsel in various notable trials. He represented the accused in various cases such as the Nirbhaya rape case in 2012, Sant Rampal case in 2014, Sant Ram Rahim case in 2019, Hathras rape case in 2020 and Seema Haider case in 2023.
During his career, AP Singh has also taken up cases involving Delhi AJP MPs, several MPs and MLAs from Odisha, several Naxalite-related cases in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, and several cases of Baahubali leaders. A lawyer who took up high-profile and controversial cases, AP Singh has been both acclaimed and controversial throughout his career.
Nirvana Case
During his legal journey, he shared a deep personal connection to the Nirbhaya case, as the wife of one of the victims approached his mother for justice. Ajay’s mother was moved by their pleas and urged him to fight for the victim’s family and help them find closure and justice. At one point, he commented that Nirbhaya’s parents were irresponsible, which drew strong criticism from the public and the media. Later, after a court hearing, he reportedly told Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, that he would not allow the killer to be hanged, further fueling public scrutiny and debate over his words and actions during the legal proceedings.
Seema Haider case
In July 2023, he also drew attention when he defended Seema Haider in a case. Seema Haider illegally crossed the Indian border in May 2023 to live with her lover Sachin Meena. After filing a 38-page petition in the case, he requested the Indian government to grant Haider Indian citizenship and compared it with Adnan Sami’s Indian citizenship, which was based on Adnan Sami’s long-term residence in India.

AP Singh’s role as defence counsel in several high-profile cases including the Nirbhaya rape case has received mixed reactions from the legal fraternity. Some lawyers have criticised his approach, especially the delay in hanging the accused in the Nirbhaya case. They have questioned his motives for taking up such cases and his strategy during the legal proceedings. On the other hand, there are some lawyers who have supported Ajay Singh in defending his clients, stating that every Indian citizen has the right to seek justice and lawyers have an obligation to provide legal representation regardless of the nature of the case or public sentiment.

In 2013, AP Singh said in an interview that he would burn his daughter alive if she had premarital sex or lowered her moral standards. He said,
If my daughter or sister has a premarital affair or adultery, or lowers her moral standards and character, I will burn her alive in front of my family.”
The incident quickly caused a national outcry and he was subsequently severely criticized by the public. Talking about his statement, he said in an interview that he made the statement on impulse because the interviewer kept talking about personal issues, which angered him and made him respond like this.

- AP Singh revealed in an interview that Tantrik Chandraswami gifted him two sets of coat, trousers and robe after he finished his case in the Supreme Court. Their association also extended to Chandraswami inviting him on various foreign trips.
- He served as the National Secretary General of the BSK Lawyers’ Union.
- Apart from being a lawyer, AP Singh is also actively involved in various social organisations, particularly focusing on men’s rights and the rights of the Kayastha community. He was the Vice President of the All India Kayastha Congress (ABKM). In an interview, he expressed his desire to start a men’s rights movement to address issues related to the misuse of the law against women, with the aim of preventing men from suffering undue pain or injustice.
