Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s Relationship Timeline

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater are still together — but it’s being kept under wraps.

After meeting on the set of the upcoming film adaptation WickedThe costars developed an off-screen romance.

Their relationship, which People first confirmed in July, began following Grande’s split from her husband Dalton Gomez and Slater’s split from wife Lilly Jay.

In the months following news of their engagement, the couple has kept their relationship out of the spotlight, with a source telling PEOPLE in September, “They’re just trying to manage their new relationship privately.”

Despite recording for Wicked closed in July due to the Screen Actors Guild strike, the two have continued to bond, recently enjoying a Disney Park with Grande’s family.

December 2022: Ethan Slater joins the cast Wicked with Ariana Grande

While Grande joined the cast Wicked in November 2021, Slater’s role was not confirmed until a year later in early December 2022. Grande stars as Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, while Slater will play Boq, the lover of Elphaba’s sister Nessarose who is in love with Glinda.

December 7, 2022: Director Jon M. Chu confirms Wicked the recording has started

The same day Slater’s casting for Wicked was announced, the film’s director Jon M. Chu confirmed that filming has officially begun on the project.

March 27, 2023: Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater at Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar Party

In March 2023, Grande and Slater were photographed together while attending co-star Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar party. In an Instagram gallery shared by Yeoh, Grande and Slater were seen sitting next to each other at a table next to Eriv.

May 15, 2023: Ariana Grande celebrates her second wedding anniversary with Dalton Gomez

Two months after attending Yeoh’s Oscar party, Grande posted a rare photo of herself with husband Dalton Gomez as they celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary.

Along with “2” – the years they spent as husband and wife – with a heart and the phrase “3.5 together” – their years as a couple – both written at the top of the image, Grande wrote: “I love him so much.”

May 31, 2023: Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater movie a Wicked scene together

Later that month, Grande and Slater were photographed together on set while filming a scene in which they played their characters Glinda and Boq.

July 17, 2023: A source confirms to PEOPLE that Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez have split

In July, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that Grande and Gomez split earlier this year and have since been “quietly and lovingly working on their friendship.”

July 20, 2023: A source confirms to PEOPLE that Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater are dating

Just days later, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Grande was in a relationship with Slater. A source told PEOPLE that the relationship was fairly new, following Grande’s divorce from Gomez in January and Slater’s split from wife Lilly Jay.

Slater and Jay married in November 2018, and in January 2023, Slater revealed that he and Jay had welcomed their first child, a son, by sharing a photo of a jumpsuit with the caption “Wicked Cute”.

July 26, 2023: Ethan Slater reportedly files for divorce from his wife Lilly Jay

After the news of his relationship with Grande went public, Slater filed for divorce in New York on July 26, according to TMZ. The reason for his split with Jay was not given.

A day after Slater filed for divorce, Jay broke her silence on her estranged husband’s relationship with Grande, noting that her main focus was being a “good mom” to her and Slater’s child amid the divorce.

September 4, 2023: Sources tell PEOPLE that Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater are trying to balance their relationship in the public eye

In early September, multiple sources gave PEOPLE insight into Grande and Slater’s relationship, revealing how they conducted their romance in the public eye.

“Even though this whole situation is overblown, it’s a lot different than what’s been portrayed in public,” a friend of the couple told PEOPLE. “They’re just trying to manage their new relationship privately.”

“People have tried to question the timeline,” a close family friend noted of the relationship between the pop star and Tony nominee. “It’s true that Ariana and Ethan didn’t start seeing each other until after both parties had separated, respectfully.”

September 18, 2023: Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez filed for divorce

Months after their split was announced, Grande filed for divorce from Gomez on Sept. 18, and Gomez filed an answer immediately afterward, PEOPLE confirmed.

At the time, a source told PEOPLE that Grande and Gomez “took time together to slowly work out the details of the agreement privately,” adding, “They were very caring and respectful of each other through every step of the process.”

Calling the split “amicable and patient,” a source told PEOPLE that both Grande and Gomez have “moved on.”

September 2023: Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater go to Disney Park together

On September 25, photos surfaced of Grande and Slater visiting a Disney Park together, marking one of their first public appearances as a couple.

“They went with a large group of friends, as well as her mom and brother, and they are very happy and very good to each other. All her friends love him,” a source close to Grande told PEOPLE.
